NOBLES’ OPERATION ROUND UP APPLICATION DEADLINE IS DRAWING NEAR

A local school needs to provide books for underprivileged students. A local hospice needs new equipment and a local fire department needs to raise money for pagers. You see these types of stories on the news and read them in the papers. What have they all got in common? Thanks to Nobles Cooperative Electric’s Operation Round Up program, the answer to this question is “help in time of need.”

YETI COOLER GIVEAWAY AND KID’S SCAVENGER HUNT TO BE AT THE MURRAY COUNTY FAIR

Be sure to stop by the Murray County Water Resource booth in the Horticulture building during the Murray County Fair to test your knowledge of aquatic invasive species and enter to win a 45-quart Yeti Tundra cooler. One cooler will be given away each day on Thursday, August 19, Friday, August 20 and Saturday, August 21. You do not need to be present to win; however, you must be 18 or older to enter.

GREAT PLAINS TRACTOR PULL TO BE HELD AUGUST 18

The Great Plains Tractor Pull will take place at the Murray County Fairgrounds in Slayton on August 18, 2021 from 6:30 to 10:30 pm. The Great Plains Tractor Pullers include pullers from throughout the Plains area.

SLAYTON FIRE DEPARTMENT CELEBRATES 125 YEARS (1895-2020)

In August we finally have the opportunity to celebrate an important anniversary - the 125th anniversary of our Slayton Fire Department! On Saturday, August 21st the fire department will be featured in the 1pm parade on Broadway Avenue. Vintage trucks and current vehicles from many regional communities will join the parade, and a free will donation dinner will be served at the fairgrounds. The Murray County Fair Board has even extended the hours of the open class and commercial buildings on Saturday so everyone has time to enjoy the entire fair for this very special occasion.

CARING COMMUNITY CRIMINALS LINE UP TO SUPPORT PROGRAMS FOR LOCAL KIDS

Generous people across Murray County are raising bail to benefit our youngest citizens. The Early Childhood Initiative’s Jail & Bail fundraiser will take place on the courthouse lawn the opening day of the Murray County Fair on Wednesday, August 18 from 2-7 p.m. Our 2021 “inmates” include Slayton Police Chief Jeremy Steinle, Murray County Central School Superintendent Joe Meyer, Fulda Public School Superintendent Loy Woelber, Murray County Medical Center CEO Luke Schryvers, Brandon Winter representing Jacobson & Bergerson PLLP, the Presbyterian Women group from The First Presbyterian Church of Slayton, Trish Grieme on behalf of the Slayton Public Library, Currie State Bank, Dana Gunnink representing State Bank of Chandler, Kim Holm & Riley Engbath, David Hollis, Westin Kruger, BR Heronimus, Dane Hanson, Kane & Max Mathiason, Marilyn Carlson, Josh Malchow, and Krista Keller. Nate Wieneke, the MCC Football Team, and the MCC Volleyball Team will also go behind bars to represent MCC Schools. Additional volunteers are being added to this list daily, and the Murray County ECI would love to hear from you!

SCHOOL BOARD RECEIVES UPDATES ON SUMMER PROJECTS

Murray County Central School Board met on Monday, August 9th. The Board reviewed and approved the financials for the month along with the claims. They also reviewed policy changes/updates to the Online Learning and Fund Balance policies. For any students doing online learning this year, the district has teamed up with Stars Academy through the co-op. The Fund Balance Policy did get the recommended amount to keep on hand adjusted from 12% to 20%. The Board agreed that if they feel it is too much, they will adjust at the next annual review of the policy. There were minor changes to Family and Medical Leave Policy; Harassment and Violence; Mandated Reporting of Child Neglect or Physical or Sexual Abuse; Mandated Reporting of Maltreatment of Vulnerable Adults; Student Discipline; Bullying Prohibition Policy; Student Sex Nondiscrimination; School District System Accountability; and Crisis Management Policy.
