This will have been a busy week for nearly everyone - first getting things ready for Christmas and then Christmas Day. In past years that meant starting with cleaning the house, buying the remaining food items and getting the last of the Christmas cards out. Reading those which arrived and then the Christmas presents too, buying, wrapping, and finally exchanging them.

The American Legion Auxiliary Department of Minnesota is offering various scholarships to students throughout Minnesota. Scholarships are available to high school seniors or college students seeking further education. There are also healthcare scholarships and non-traditional scholarships for American Legion Auxiliary members.

There will be a community dinner held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 25 at the St. Ann’s Church Hall in Slayton.

The C, B, and Varsity teams would all be in action Thursday night in Slayton vs. the Adrian/ Ellsworth Dragons basketball teams. It would be a solid night for all squads as they each earned a victory.

The Fulda Murray County Central Warriors made the trip to Redwood Falls, MN for the Redwood River Riot on Friday night leading into Saturday for a very big 32 team tournament. Christian Kuball for the second week in a row made another impressive showing placing 8th in another tournament where the Warriors haven had a placing since Jon Gehl won 8th place in 2016. The junior varsity team really made some racket over the two day tournament filing 70 matches to the varsity’s 14. Each JV wrestler would expect at least 6 matches in the two days and they all showed true competition and hard work in their matches.

Friday night MCC would face the Canby Lancers at the C, B, and Varsity levels. Canby is in the North half of the section and would prove to be great competition at all levels.

The MCC Rebel Girls Basketball team wrapped up their pre-Christmas portion of their schedule Friday night in Fulda. The Rebel girls won’t play again until January 4th and the Rebels were looking to go into their break with a much-needed win. The Heron Lake Okabena Fulda Coyotes were also looking for a needed win but not because they just wanted to get a win but because it would give them a 4-4 record. The Coyotes are an experienced team with 7 seniors who play and several starters who have played at the varsity level for three seasons and more. The Rebels would put together a good first half but it was the second half that would prove to be too much for the Rebels.

A minister dreamed he was hitched to a covered wagon and was slowly pulling it along. However, after a little while the load became much heavier and his progress was greatly hindered. The last time he had looked back, the congregation was pushing, so he went to the back to see what the problem was. The people were too tired and were all sitting in the wagon criticizing the pastor for not pulling the Church along faster. This story reminds me of the fellow who asked a minister from a distant city, “How many do you have in your Church?” “Three hundred and fifty,” replied the pastor. “Really!’ said the other. “And how many of them are active?” “All of them are active,” was the response. “About thirty of them are active for the Lord; the rest are active for the devil.”

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a new program to assist hog producers who sold hogs through a negotiated sale during the period in which these producers faced the greatest reduction in market prices due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Spot Market Hog Pandemic Program (SMHPP) is part of USDA’s Pandemic Assistance for Producers initiative and addresses gaps in previous assistance for hog producers. USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) will accept applications Dec. 15, 2021 through Feb. 25, 2022.
