For the sixth year, NOAA and the National Weather Service are proud to recognize “Ambassadors of Excellence” -- a select number of WRN Ambassador organizations that have made significant contributions to building a Weather-Ready Nation. Every summer, campers at Shetek Lutheran Ministries (SLM) are encouraged to share an offering to support other ministries. Through their generosity over the years, campers have donated over $28,000 to Christian organizations. SLM (www.shetek. org) was able to safely hold camp for over 620 campers this past summer who gave donations totaling $390 to Camp Love’s Embrace (CLE). This annual camp held at SLM is an overnight children’s grief camp for children ages 7-14 who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling, grandparent, best friend, or other person of significance in their lives. In May of 2003, the first Camp Love’s Embrace was held at the Lakota Retreat Center on beautiful Lake Shetek near Slayton, Minnesota. Now, an annual event, the camp is FREE to any child who attends, as it continues to be funded by the generous contributions of individuals, churches, businesses, and corporations. The annual camp is scheduled for Friday, April 21st – Sunday, April 23rd, 2023 at the Lakota Retreat Center at Shetek Lutheran Ministries. Find out more at www.camplovesembrace.com

The Murray County Board of Commissioners met in regular session on Tuesday, September 27, 2022. On the recommendation of the ARPA Committee three projects were approved. The County has nearly $1.6M from the American Rescue Plan Act of which $992,000 is set aside to fund projects. In the latest action $3,300 will be spent on a laser Fische scanner to improve efficiencies in the government building. $143,781 will replace aging public safety infrastructure with replacement of twenty- year-old fire repeaters and related equipment in the radio plan for a new highway department building. By decreasing the square footage by 2500 ft, eliminating a second floor and modifying other spaces, they propose that the construction costs can be lowered to fall within the budgeted amount. Bids will be opened in early December.

The public is invited attend the annual meeting of the Murray County Historical Society on Sunday, October 16 at 2 PM. The meeting will be held at the Hadley Community Center (150 S Main St, Hadley, MN). Pie and coffee will be provided. Following the annual business meeting, we are excited to welcome University of Minnesota Extension Educator and Professor Sara Croymans to present “Who Gets Grandma’s Yellow Pie Plate?”

I learned to ride a bike on a hand-me-down boy’s Schwinn. The vinyl banana seat was torn and the front tire was out of alignment, but I rode it all around Jasper until the spring of 1975, when I laid eyes on a blue five-speed Raleigh in the window of Frackman’s Hardware.

Your group, organization, or business is invited to participate in the Murray County Museum’s 2022 Holiday Open House at the Dinehart Holt House! This year the theme is “A Recycled Christmas!” We encourage you to decorate a tree, area of the home, or even a whole room. Use your imagination to come up with something fun using recycled materials.
