The Murray County Central Volleyball team participated in two tournaments during mid season play. September 30th found the Rebels in Bertha, MN to participate in the Bertha Hewitt Annual tournament for the first time.

Stay Healthy this Fall Fall is here and we are seeing the spread of viral illnesses. This often happens when we are spending more time indoors with one another and celebrating holidays. Some common viral illnesses expected are Influenza and COVID-19. Influenza, often referred to as “the flu”, is not the same illness as the “stomach flu”. Influenza is a viral respiratory infection that may present with the following symptoms: chills, body aches, fever, headache, cough, runny or stuffy nose, and sore throat. Once infected with influenza, it may take 1-4 days for symptoms to start and symptoms usually last up to 7 days. Influenza is spread through coughing, sneezing, and touching contaminated hands, objects, or surfaces. The contagious period includes the first 24 hours before and up to 7 days after the illness begins. Common ways to prevent the spread of influenza include covering your cough, proper hand hygiene, staying home when ill, proper cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces, and receiving your annual influenza vaccination. If you think your child has influenza, it is recommended that you notify your childcare provider and/or the school health office. Please keep your child home from childcare and school until 24 hours after fever is gone (without the use of fever reducing medicine) and your child is healthy enough for routine activities. If you have concerns with your child’s health, it is encouraged to call your healthcare provider.

The MCC Rebels took on the TMB Panthers last Friday night for homecoming 2023. After a week of fun and different events, the game would pit two rivals against one another. The two teams have faced off against one another in big games over the past couple of years but Friday it was homecoming and the Rebels were hoping to turn excitement into a big win. That unfortunately didn’t happen as the Panthers would run and throw all over the Rebels on their way to another win. MCC put together a great defensive first quarter forcing a pair of turnovers and a short field after a punt but the Rebels failed to score. After the first twelve minutes, the two teams were tied entering the second quarter 0-0. That is when things changed. With 10:22 to play in the first half, Trevor Smith threw a perfect pass down the Panther sideline where it was caught by Jeret Ankrum for a 73-yard touchdown catch. The Ankrum extra point made the score 7-0. Nine seconds later the Panthers would score on a MCC fumble as Alex Shuh would pick up the fumble and run it into the endzone for another score and the kick made it 14-0. The route was on and the Panthers would score three more first-half touchdowns. With the Panthers already up 28-0 Teague Meyer would try to make a play late in the first half but his pass attempt was intercepted by Eathan Martinez and the senior lineman playing in his first game of the year returned the INT nearly 60 yards for a touchdown making the halftime score 53 to 0.

On Thursday October 5th the Warriors competed at the BOLD/BLHS Invite in Olivia. Olivia’s golf course is notorious for being one of the flattest courses the Warriors compete at all season.

The Parks & Trails Council of Minnesota and Wilderness Inquiry teamed up recently to provide memorable experienc-es for countless people of all ages at the former Boy Scout Camp near Lake Shetek State Park. That would not have been possible if the Parks & Trails Council of Minnesota hadn’t stepped up to purchase the land when it came up for sale in October 2020. President Brett Feldman said the organization paid a record-high $1.85 million for the 24.5 acres of land. “We placed our winning bid right un-der this tree,” Feldman said on Saturday. “This was our largest single purchase in the history of our organization.” Feldman explained that the Parks & Trails Council of Min-nesota had been around since 1954 and that private money is raised to purchase land for public parks and trails. “We’ve grown a land fund over the years that’s now worth about $5.2 million and it’s a revolv-ing fund, so we will sometimes have $5 million in land and $200,000 in cash or the other way around,” he said. “At the time this went to auction, we were stretched to the brink. We only had two months’ no-tice it was going to auction, so we stretched ourselves, which meant other active projects were threatened, but private donors came through.” Thanks to that dedication, people can continue to en-joy outdoor recreation there for generations to come. Last week, hundreds of local school children were expected to take for future generations,” said Katie Chapman, director of environmental learning for Shetek Lutheran Ministries. “Between the old growth forest, pristine shoreline, historic campsites, archaeological importance and so much more, students were able to connect with and understand both the beauty and significance of the land itself.”

By Jenny Kirk Representatives of the Ondini Circuit of South Africa recently came together with the dual intention of reviving their 15-plus year partnership to continue growing in their faith together. The Lake Shetek Conference — the Southwestern Minnesota Synod of Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) which includes congregations in the counties of Cottonwood, Jackson, Nobles, Murray, Pipestone and Rock — and the Ondini Circuit — the South Eastern Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa (ELCSA) which encompasses 60 congregations and 12 parishes — began their unique partnership in 2009 but communication efforts have dwindled somewhat since COVID-19 hit, so they are looking to reaffirm their commitments to each other.
