The MCC Rebel Volleyball team faced their toughest opponent in the Red Rock Conference to this point in the season.
The Rebels were in Westbrook taking on the Chargers with both teams with 3 wins and 1 loss on the season. The Rebels were looking to pull off the win over last year’s Section 3A runner up. The Rebels would battle but they would come up on the short end of the stick.
The Rebels and the Chargers played three sets that mirrored each other. The first game WWG got out to a 5-1 lead led by the serve of Sydney Foster who put the Chargers in the lead.
Carlie Ross’s defense kept plays alive as Hadley Jenniges would guide WWG to a big lead for most of the first set. The Rebels made a run late in the game led by Reese Gilbertson. Kat Miller picked her moments to get three early kills but the Rebels would drop set 1, 25 to 22.
The second set was much like the first. The Chargers built an early lead that would reach 5 and 6 points and MCC would have to play catch up. Natasha Wahl had a nice balanced effort for the Chargers while Leah Carter made big shots to put WWG in front.
The Rebels came back led by some scrappy play from everyone in the game. No one stood out offensively for the Rebels as they showed some good balance. The Rebels tied the game at 23-23 late in the second set but the Chargers scored the final two points of the set to win 25 to 23.
The third game followed the same script of game 2. MCC fell behind early while the Chargers took control of the game. MCC battled back over the portion of the game to try and take the set.
The Rebels had some great moments with Suttyn Schryvers, Reese Gilbertson, and Kate Blankenship each had big shots as the Rebels came from behind. Both teams showed some scrappy and gritty play but the Chargers seemed to be able to answer the Rebels shot for shot.
It seemed like every time the Rebels had some of the play going their way, Carlie Ross would come up with a strong defensive play. At the end of the game, with points in short supply, Leah Carter came up with two big kills that put the Chargers on top 25 to 23.
The Rebels were led in kills by Reese Gilbertson, who finished with 10. The Rebels didn’t have another player with more than 6, but several players were in that range. In close games the little errors are compounded and the Rebels inability to take early leads was costly. Leah Carter led the Chargers with 13 kills but the Chargers defense forced the Rebels to be very with precise their shots and in the end the Chargers got the 3-0 win.
The Rebels are now 7-5 this season and will play Thursday at Edgerton Public.
