By Allie Paulzine, Student Reporter The MCC/F Warriors had a strong performance at the Minnesota State High School League Class 3A Cross Country Meet on Saturday, with three athletes representing the team in the prestigious event. Despite tough competition, the Warriors displayed determination and grit, with notable individual performances.
Senior Evan Bumgardner led the Warriors, placing 22nd in the boys’ varsity race with a time of 16:42. Bumgardner’s top-25 finish earned him All-State honors, a remarkable achievement for the seasoned runner. With 160 athletes in the race, Bumgardner’s performance was a testament to his skill and dedication over the years. “It’s a great way to finish off my high school career,” Bumgardner said.
Junior Mathew Stapek also represented the Warriors well, finishing in 96th place with a time of 17:46. Stapek’s performance was solid, demonstrating his continued growth as a competitive runner. Stapek’s perseverance and dedication will no doubt be valuable assets for the Warriors in future seasons.
On the girls’ side, eighth grader Mara Clarke made a significant impact, finishing in 45th place in the highly competitive varsity race. Clarke completed the 5K course in 20:14, an impressive feat for a runner so young. Despite being one of the youngest competitors in the race, Clarke held her own against a strong field of upperclassmen, showcasing her potential for future success. Clarke’s performance has set a high bar for future years, and her presence at the state meet highlights the promising future of the Warriors’ girls’ team.
The performances of Bumgardner, Stapek, and Clarke were a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire MCC/F team. The trio’s presence at the state meet reflects the Warriors’ continued success and commitment to excellence in cross country. The Warriors will return next season with a mix of experienced runners and exciting new talent, including Clarke, who will be one to watch as she continues to develop.
