THE STORY OF OUR BABY
The title upon the baby book read, “The Story of Our Baby.” The faded light blue satin upon the cover was evidence of the years gone by. The white lamb framed within splotches of brown seeping through were indicative of the aging process. I’d thumbed through it many a time but with very little written upon its pages, it didn’t take long. The birthing order found me sandwiched between my older sister and my younger brother by eleven months on both ends of the bookends. Perhaps that was the reason why so few words were written within. Mom, no doubt, had little time for frills of any sort other than tending to the needs of her babes.
As I looked at it once again, something dropped from its pages I hadn’t seen before. It was an envelope with a handwritten letter signed by my great grandparents welcoming me into the world. The words touched deeply. Evidence they had taken time to acknowledge me, spoke. The words written validated their love for me, and to have proof that they were even be thinking about me at all, warmed my heart.
As I turned a page, there before me was something else that I’d not noticed before. It was a list of things I’d received my very first Christmas.
1.Toy horse 2.Two dresses 3.T-shirt and overalls 4.Dog that jumps when wound 5.Silver cup 6.Doll 7.Rattles It wasn’t the gifts so much that had been given, it was knowing others were thinking of me even though I was unaware.
“Don’t worry, mom. They are so little; they won’t know who gave them a gift or who didn’t.” These words I hear often from my grown kiddos who are speaking of my grands when the time has come and gone for a birthday or two. The words gifted are generous as our growing list of little people needs managing to better keep me on top of it all. Now, after reviewing my own baby book, I know I need to step it up.
“Horton Hears a Who” by Dr. Seuss speaks wisdom. “A person’s a person no matter how small.” Even though Dr. Seuss says it well, Jesus Christ says it best in Psalm 127:3. “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.”
Does it get any better knowing that when little ones to Him belong are created, He not only said way back in Genesis that they were not only good, but very good? From cover to cover may we let these little ones know just how valued they are in thought, word, and deed. May they carry with them the truth of the matter—which is— they matter—no matter how small. Amen.
