BASEBALL VS MLAC

The MCC Baseball team has started the season strong, winning their first two games of the season. The Rebels finished last week with two key games, first Thursday, a Red Rock Conference game against Mountain Lake Area Comfrey and then on Friday, a home game against Section 3A opponent Tracy Milroy Balaton. The Rebels played their first road game in Mountain Lake with a strong wind blowing into their faces all game. The Rebels put together a great performance on the mound and in the field, as they picked up the win.

Thursday, the real story was the pitching of Teague Meyer, who threw all seven innings in the win. The Rebel junior only allowed 4 hits in the game while striking out 6 and walking 1. The Rebels only committed one error in the game as the Wolverines struggled to get base runners. In the time of the pitch count, being economical with pitches is key. Meyer, in his 7 innings, only threw 88 pitches, which is just over 12 per inning! The great outing on the mound and in the field, allowed the Rebels to win a game without having a big offensive game. The Rebels ended the game with just 6 hits and they came from the top three hitters in the lineup. Teague Meyer had 1, Gavin Gillette had 2, and Dylan Kluis had 3. The Rebel’s bottom five hitters in the lineup did a great job getting on base. The quintet combined for 6 walks which allowed the top of the order to come to bat with runners on base. MCC won 4-0.

The Rebels third victory of the season was a good showing, considering the Rebels only scored 4 runs. In their first two games, runs came in bunches, so to win a game when the offense is more difficult is huge. Dylan Kluis led the Rebels with 3 hits in 4 at bats including a double with one RBI. Gavin Gillette went 2 for 4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Landon Simon took the loss for the Wolverines on the mound. He allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks in two and a third innings pitched. The Rebels would finish the week back at home on Friday against the TMB Panthers.

BASEBALL VS TMB

High School Baseball has changed since the pitch count has been put in effect, limiting the number of pitches each pitcher can throw before they have to rest before pitching in another game. When a team plays three games in one week it can test a team’s pitching depth, so managing pitch counts and developing pitchers becomes paramount. For pitchers, it puts a premium on getting outs early in counts by pop ups or ground outs rather than strikeouts. Friday, the Rebels took on the TMB Panthers in a big section match-up with the Rebels being able to get through the games earlier in the week allowing Dylan Kluis to make the start and giving the Rebels a big advantage.

Noah Knakmuhs got the start for the Panthers. The Rebels were ready and scored 14 runs in the first three innings. Teague Meyer doubled to open the game. After an out was recorded, Dylan Kluis then singled to put runners on the corners with one out. A wild pitch would score Meyer and courtesy runner Danny Larson would advance to second base. The Rebels failed to score another run in the first inning but MCC wasn’t done scoring. The Rebels scored 9 runs in the second inning with a host of hits, including a double by Cayden Veldhuisen. Dylan Kluis drove in a pair of runs and the rout was on. MCC added another three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Meanwhile, Dylan Kluis was rock solid on the mound, not allowing a run until the fifth inning when he allowed a pair of unearned runs. MCC got the win in 5 innings, 14 to 2.

Dylan Kluis picked up the win, striking out 5 and walking 5 in 5 innings. Noah Knakmuhs took the loss for the Panthers, allowing 12 earned runs and 14 runs total in just over two innings of work. The Panthers pitchers only walked 2 hitters in the game, but they allowed 13 hits and the team committed 2 errors. Dylan Kluis led the Rebels with 3 hits and 3 RBI’s in the win. Cayden Veldhuisen had two hits and 3 RBI’s, while Teague Meyer had 2 hits in 3 at bats and scored 2 runs. The Rebels picked up their 4th win of the season against 0 losses. The Rebels scored double digit runs for the third time in four games. MCC will play Monday at home against HLOF and Thursday at home against RRC/WWG before the Easter Break.
