SLAYTON CITY COUNCIL APPROVED PURCHASE AGREEMENT WITH NORTHWEST NATURAL GAS AND SET COMMUNITY MEETINGS

The Slayton City Council met in regular session on March 3, 2025 with all members in attendance. No one was present for Public Forum. They began by approving the agenda with additions, as well as, the minutes from the last meeting. They then went on to approve the claims and cash balances for the month. They reminded everyone of the dates for the Northwest Natural Gas Community Meetings. These will happen on Thurs. March 27th at 6:30 and also on April 23rd at 6:30.

Electric Utility Discussion petition was filed with the PUC on Tues, Feb. 25. We have not received any correspondence back yet.

They next talked about the Golden Living Center Development project, the SWM Housing Partnership has asked if we are still thinking about doing assisted living in the community? They are interested in purchasing about an acre and a half in the southern part of the property to put up duplexes. After some discussion, it was decided to ask them to make an offer for the city to consider. This is a TIF District that can provide assistance with site prep and utility extensions, but that expires in 2026. The MN Signature Care company is still interested in the project. However, there is no set date for them to take action. City Administrator Josh Malchow has requested an updated needs assessment be done from when they did the last one 5 years ago.

The net item of discussion for the Council was to take action on the purchase agreement between the City of Slayton and Northwest Natural Gas of Murray County, LLC, along with the Fuel Transportation Agreement and Operation and Maintenance Agreement between the same two parties. These agreements were approved. The Council also approved the documents stating that all agreements are contingent on special election approval and have been “approved” by both party’s legal representation.

Next, the Council approved the purchase of a new Water Pump for the Water Department. This came in under budget and will assist with keeping water in people’s basements.

The last items of business were to approve the yearly liquor licenses in Slayton. These include The Grain Exchange, Slayton Country Club, Aryian, LLC, Beaver Creek Archery Club, Murray County Racing Association, Slayton Foods Inc, and Family Dollar. These were approved. They also approved the request for a off-site gambling license for Currie Town & County at the Murray County 4H Building for Bingo. Lastly, they approved an advertising contract with Christensen Broadcasting for the next year.
