With the first meeting of 2026, the Slayton City Council accepted the resignation of Police Chief Jeremy Steinle, appointing Sergeant Jesse Hoffmann to serve as interim chief.
Police Chief Jeremy Steinle served the City of Slayton as a police officer from 2006 to 2021 and Chief of Police from 2021 to early January 2026. At the January 5, 2026 Regular Council Meeting, Council members expressed their sincere appreciation for his years of dedication to public safety and service to the community.
Slayton Mayor Miron Carney, who is starting his 15th year as mayor of Slayton, stated, “From his early years on patrol to his leadership as Chief, he served the City of Slayton with professionalism, care, and a strong sense of responsibility to our residents. We are grateful for his many years of service to our City and wish him and his family all the best moving forward.”
In other business, corporate signers were set for the year, as were 2026 depositories. There are no changes to the city by-laws for 2026. The Wheel/Herald was approved as the official newspaper for the City of Slayton.
There was discussion regarding committee appointments, and whether some of the committees are necessary. According to Slayton City Administrator Josh Malchow, some committees are required by ordinance or the city’s bylaws. Malchow will do some research to find out which committees are based on ordinance, then the council can make decisions on the necessity of committees that rarely meet.
Fire contracts were approved for the cities of Avoca and Hadley, and the townships of Leeds, Lime Lake, Lowville, Mason and Slayton.
