MCC 41 - MLAC 36
The MCC Rebel Girls were in Mountain Lake this past Friday to play the Wolverines of Mountain Lake Area Comfrey. The Rebels beat the Wolverines earlier this season but it wasn’t an easy game. This game had a bit more riding on it. The Rebels playoff seeding was on the line. The Rebels needed a win to likely be the 7th seed in the sub-section playoffs while the Wolverines were hoping to see junior guard Julia Brinkman score her 1,000th career point. One side would be happy at the end of the game and one wouldn’t.
This was a low scoring game from beginning to end. Neither team got into a good rhythm on the offensive end. Julia Brinkman needed 18 points to reach 1,000 in her career and in the first half, she led her team in scoring, with 6. The Wolverines struggled with turnovers in the first half, giving the ball away 12 times, but the Rebels didn’t do a great job of making MLAC pay for their mistakes. The Rebels led at the half 16 to 12 but no one had scored more than 6 points.
Both teams had leads in the second half. MCC led by as much as five points, while the Wolverines led by as many as four. Brinkman had a great second half. In fact, she scored more points in the second half than any Rebel had in the entire game. Both teams struggled shooting from the field but in the second half, the Rebels got to the free throw line 22 times. MCC made 12 from the charity stripe, which would be huge, because, other than Taylor Larson, no one in white and purple made more than one shot from the field. With the clock ticking down, the Rebels led and made enough free throws to get the 41 to 36 win.
The Rebels picked up the win they needed. Brinkman would score 17 points, leaving her one shy of her 1,000 th career point. With a couple regular season games left, by the time you read this article, she will have her milestone. Taylor Larson led the Rebels with 10 points, while Thea Schneider scored 9 points and 9 rebounds. The Rebels will be the 7th seed in the Sub-Section 3a South playoffs and they will host RRC on Thursday in Slayton at 7:00 pm. The Rebels wrap up their regular season on Monday night in Slayton against the Red Rock Conference Champion Hills Beaver Creek Patriots.
