The MCC Rebel Volleyball team was in Worthington Tuesday night to play in the Sub-Section 3A South semifinals for the first time in 6 seasons, looking to pull off their best win in years as they were taking on the to-seeded RTR Knights. The Rebels had lost to RTR 3-0 earlier this season and had a chance to win the first set before the team let it slip away.
The Rebels would not have that opportunity on Tuesday.
The RTR Knights went into the game riding a 16-game winning streak and the Rebels would not end it. MCC got off to a good start taking a 8-6 lead with Kat Miller, Suttyn Schryers, and Kate Blankenship getting early kills for the Rebels. RTR took a couple net calls early in the game, but as the first set moved along the RTR Knights took control. Sara Thooft put down 4 kills as the Knights took set 1, 25 to 13.
Rebels sophomores Reece Gilbertson and Suttyn Schryvers tried to keep the core close, but the Knights did not back down. Their constant pressure kept the Rebels off guard. The Knights were scoring by hitting the ball hard and in the right spots over and over again. A big run by the Knights created a big separation. RTR took set 2, 25 to 15.
The Knights kept the pressure on the Rebels in the third set. RTR came up with some big blocks, and though Peyton DeGreeff and Suttyn Schryvers would come up with some good swings, the Knights were just too tough. Try as the Rebels might, the Knights had more options to score and they kept the ball in play. RTR pulled away, winning 25 to 12 in a fast-moving 3-set match.
Suttyn Schryvers led the Rebels with 10 kills in the game. The Rebels finished the season 13-11 and took another step in the playoffs, making it to the Semifinals. The Rebels will bring back a large number of this year’s roster, but they will lose some key seniors.
Kate Blankenship, Ava Deacon, Calleigh Doeden, Peyton DeGreeff, Lila Scandrett, and Josie Spartz played their final games as MCC Rebels on Tuesday and they will be missed. The returning Rebels will look to take yet another step in the development of the program.
