SWC 58 - MCC 46

The MCC Rebels were at home on Monday night to play one of their final three games over the next week. The Rebels would play two of the top 4 teams in the Red Rock Conference in those three games. The Rebels hosted the Eagles of Southwest Minnesota Christian, the team the Rebels beat in their best game of the season. With the Rebels C squad winning and then the B-squad coming from behind by 13 points to force overtime and then win, the Rebels were hoping for a season sweep. The Rebels would come up just short.

The first half was a defensive battle. MCC’s man to man defense held up well against the Eagles who struggled to make shots in the first half. The Rebels offense did enough to get the Eagles out of their 1-3-1 zone defense. The Rebels actually led at one point by 11 points in the first half, but that lead was short lived as the Eagles put together a run of their own. The Rebels scored 23 first half points, led by Kat Miller with 7 and Taylor Larson with 6. The Eagles only made 1 two point shot the entire first half. What they did do was make 8 free throws and 4 three point shots. The Rebels led at the half 23 to 22.

The second half was tough on the Rebels as the Eagles scored the first 8 points of the half, building a 7 point lead. Ava Deacon scored two points before picking up her fourth foul. The Rebels would match their 23 points in the first half with 23 more points in the second half, but though the Rebels made 9 free throws, they left points on the floor. The Rebels only made six shots from the field in the second half. Madyson Fey is one of the top scorers in the Red Rock Conference and she scored 17 points in the second half. Hannah Caspersen scored 8 points in the second half, but her two three-point baskets proved to be clutch as the Rebels were trying to get back in the game. SWC beat the Rebels 58 to 46.

MCC outshot the Eagles in the game 32% to the Eagles 28% and also out rebounded the Eagles 40 to 27. What paved the way for SWC was making 5 more three point shots than the Rebels and 7 more free throws. Thea Schneider led the Rebels with 9 points, while Ava Deacon and Taylor Larson scored 8 each. Kat Miller and Kate Blankenship grabbed 8 rebounds each to lead the Rebels. Madyson Fey scored 26 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in the win. MCC will play Thursday in Mountain Lake.
