Thea Schneider
MCC 80 - RRC 56
The MCC Rebel Girls played their final home game of the season on Thursday night. The Rebels were the 7th seed in the Sub-Section 3A South playoffs and played host to the 10th seeded Red Rock Central Falcons. The Rebels had beaten the Falcons twice this season and a third win would move them into the quarter finals on Super Saturday in Worthington. The Rebels took care of business on Thursday night, putting up their best offensive game in front of their home crowd.
The Rebels played a solid first half even though they got off to a slow start. The Rebels’ seniors, Thea Schneider and Taylor Larson took their turns against the Falcon post defense. Schneider scored 12 first half points while Larson scored 7. The duo would score almost half the Rebels points in the first half. Kate Blankenship made six free throws in the first half and Ava Deacon scored five. The balance by the Rebels helped negate the great first half by Tia Donkersloot, who scored 14 points in the first 18 minutes. The Rebels led at the half 39 to 23.
The second half was all about the Rebels continuing to score points, something they have struggled to do all season. Kat Miller beat the first half clock for her first three point shot of the game and that confidence continued in the second half as she would score another 9 points. Thea Schneider and Ava Deacon scored seven points each in the second half. Kelli Miller and Kate Blankenship scored four points each as the Rebels kept the pressure on the Falcons. Donkersloot scored another 11 points in the second half and Kendra Schroeder added seven points but it was too much Rebels and MCC won 80-56.
The Rebels forced the Falcons into 21 turnovers in the game while giving the ball up 15 times themselves. The Rebels got the tempo a little faster than they would normally want but on Thursday the Rebels used the extra shots they took to their advantage. The Rebels had 5 players in double figures, while just a week ago, the Rebels went two games without a single double digit scorer. Thea Schneider scored a career high 19 points. Ava Deacon and Kat Miller scored 12 points each while Kate Blankenship and Taylor Larson scored 10 each. Tia Donkersloot scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Red Rock Central. The Rebels will play Adrian Ellsworth Saturday in Worthington.
