EDGERTON 61 MCC 44
The MCC Rebel GIrls Basketball team was back at home on Thursday night against the Edgerton Flying Dutchman. The Rebels lost to Edgerton back in December after having a 15 point lead in the second half. Thursday the Rebels were hoping to pull off the win over Edgerton to help with their future subsection seedings but the win wasn’t in the cards.
The Rebels got off to a great start starting with Ava Deacon whose speed and quickness got her past the Edgerton defense. Deacon scored nine points in the first half, eight of which came in the paint. The Rebels didn’t have another player score more than three points in the first half. The Flying Dutchmen showed balance on offense with four players scoring four points or more, led by Reese Vande Griend and Ailynn Johnson with six points each. As the half moved along, Edgerton took the lead and held onto it into halftime 25 to 23.
The second half saw Edgerton pull away from the Rebels as MCC struggled to score and the Flying Dutchmen had two players take over the game. The whistles were blowing more frequently in the second half. The Rebels got into foul trouble and Edgerton made the Rebels pay at the free throw line. Reese Vande Griend and Kami Smit scored 12 points each in the second half. They combined to make 8 free throws. The Rebels, on the other hand, combined to score just 21 points the entire second half. Edgerton won the game 61 to 44.
The Rebels issues started and ended with shooting, as MCC turned the ball over 14 times in the game which was great. MCC made just 23% of their total shots from the field, 20% of their three point shots, and the real let down for the Rebels was the free throw line, where MCC made just 30% of their 23 free throws. Edgerton didn’t have a great shooting game, but they outshot the Rebels on Thursday. Ava Deacon was the only Rebel in double figures with 15 points. Calleigh Doeden led the Rebels with 12 rebounds, but in her first start, she finished with 2 points. Edgerton was led by Vande Griend with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Kami Smit scored 15 points and 6 rebounds. The Rebels will play Monday night in Westbrook.
