MCC and Edgerton, fresh off of upsets in the first round of the Sub-Section 3a South playoffs, would meet up in the semifinals for a chance at a Sub-Section Championship game against HBC, at the RA Facility in Marshall. Not often do you see the 6 seed vs. the 7 seed in a semifinal match-up, but it goes to show how deep and talented this Sub-Section is.
Edgerton got off to a hot start, knocking down 5 three point shots in the first half. Six different players scored for the Flying Dutchmen in the first half as well, making them tough to defend. They raced to a 33 point first half as the Rebels struggled to find their footing defensively.
Edgerton was playing a lot like they did when they knocked off the #2 seed RTR Knights on Super Saturday, taking care of the basketball on offense, attacking gaps, and reading the help defense very well. This led to great shots, open shots, and the Flying Dutchmen connecting over and over again.
MCC was getting good looks on offense as well, but they were not falling in the first half. This led to some impatience on offense as the Rebels fell behind by double digits and were taking some quick shots, early in their possessions. Edgerton didn’t have to play defense for very long during a stretch of the game and put together long patient possessions on offense, wearing on the Rebels.
Aidan Swenson and Gavin Gillette did pace the Rebels in the first half scoring, as Swenson had 11 and Gillette had 8, combining for 19 of MCC’s 24 first half points. Something was going to need to change in the second half for the Rebels to come back and it did, as a tale of two halves unfolded.
The Rebels defense only gave up 20 points in the second half, holding the Flying Dutchmen to 6 made shots! The rest came from free throws. MCC’s offense found its stride big time, scoring 39 second half points. Gavin Gillette made big shot after big shot in the second half, not allowing Edgerton to gain any momentum. The senior hit 4 big three’s in the second half. Hudson Schryvers, Max Miller, and Tristan Behrends all hit huge 3’s as well. Behrends, a sophomore, was playing outstanding defense on one of the best scorers in the area and knocked down a big momentum- shifting three to put the Rebels in control.
With a more balanced attack on offense in the second half with 5 Rebels contributing, and suffocating defensive efforts by everyone on the court, MCC put the game away late with free throws and earned a hard fought 10 point victory. 63-53, earning a trip to Marshall and the Sub-Section 3a Championship game.
