MURRAY COUNTY CENTRAL SCHOOL BOARD DISCUSSES REFERENDUM VOTE RESULTS

During the November 10 Murray County Central Board of Education meeting, the board canvassed the results of the November 4 special election, summing up voter activity. There were 1,058 votes cast, with a total of 548 yes votes and 510 no votes. Just over 90 votes were cast on absentee ballots, and 965 votes were cast on election day at the polls.

“I want to thank everyone who came out to vote and for being a part of the process,” said Superintendent Joe Meyer. “This was an important decision for our community.”

Meyer added, “This vote was a vote for our kids, our teachers and our staff, and I’m pretty sure the district and community, and on behalf of the entire district, we are very grateful for the outcome.”

The board heard highlights from the past month from school administration. West Elementary Principal Patrick Freeman mentioned Pioneer Day, 51 students who went to the Young Artist Conference, and a very successful Trick or Trot. Upcoming dates of note include Parent-Teacher conferences Monday, November 25 and Tuesday, November 26. Staff sent out sign-up links for parents. Thanksgiving break will be November 27 and 28.

High School Principal Jacob Scandrett reported a successful evacuation drill at the high school in October, a Read Act update, and a slight uptick in ACT composite scores. Last year’s score was 19.6, this year MCC scores were 19.9. This is slightly below a state average of 20.6 and above the national average of 19.4. Scandrett also reported that the school has begun harvesting lettuce from the Hydroponic Grow Shed.

The Activities report from James Wajer included mention of fall sports. The Volleyball Team ended their season with a record of 13-11, winning their first round of section play. The team will graduate six seniors this year. Cross Country wrapped up their season with the Girls Team taking third place at the conference. The Boys Team finished as conference champions and finished third in the section. Four individuals competed at state. The MCC Football Team is headed to state and will be playing at US Bank Stadium. Wajer reported a “phenomenal” showing of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” from the MCC Drama Department.
