Murray County 4-H hosted the second to last of it’s After School Adventures Program series at the Fulda Elementary School and Murray County Central School Districts.

The March session theme was, “Size vs STEM.” Youth were able to see the difference in outcomes of different STEM activities based on the materials given size ranges. Youth were asked to create three parachutes from three different sized plastic cloth pieces. Once the youth attached the string and weighted item to the opposite side of the plastic cloth, an adult volunteer climbed a ladder and dropped each size of parachute to see what impact the size of the plastic cloth made. The second activity included creating a shape of a sail that youth felt would move the farthest in the wind on top of a Styrofoam boat. Youth learned how to anchor a sail to the boat, and based on the shape, they were able to see how far the object went but also the direction that it went. They made alterations to their original to see if they could improve their design. Hudson Spartz, a kindergartener, was able to design his boat and sail to go 18 feet. Way to go Hudson!

For Murray County Central, this was held on March 11 at the Murray County 4-H Building and in Fulda on March 13. Each session goes from 3 – 5 p.m. and includes a healthy snack along with reflection after the activities have been completed.

There is still one more After School Program session offered, “Using STEAM to Grow” in each location: Murray County Central – April 1 Fulda – April 3 If you think this would be a good opportunity for the youth in your family, please reach out to the Murray County Extension Office and we would be happy to get them signed up!
