WWG 69 - MCC 60
MCC is coming off two tough losses against great competition. Facing a strong WWG would prove to be no different as the 9-3 Chargers came into town, looking to spoil the Rebels last game of the week. Both teams got off to a slow start offensively before the Rebels’ Gavin Gillette got the first points of the game, over a minute and a half into the contest. This is where the Rebels had a chance to gain a nice lead, as the offense got great look after great look, but the ball wouldn’t go in the bucket. The defense was playing really well, but the offense couldn’t gain any separation. The score would remain at 2-0 until WWG finally scored at the 12:45 mark of the first half. They hit a 3, to take the lead. MCC answered back quickly to regain it on their next possession.
WWG drilled a deep three on their next possession to recapture the lead at 6-5. They followed this up with another three to make it a 9-5 lead.
The shooting woes continued to plague the Rebels in the first half, as they could only muster up 19 first half points. It wasn’t for a lack of good action and good looks, the ball just wouldn’t go in the hole. WWG found a nice rhythm on offense at the same time the Rebels struggled to score. They went on a big run, going from 9 points with 9:33 left in the first half, all the way to 31 before the break! Halftime score, WWG 31, MCC 19.
The Rebels got the ball out of the break, but unfortunately, turned it over on the first possession. The second half looked like it might start out like the first half, where the defenses played well and the offenses were looking to break through. Two minutes in and neither team had scored.
Aidan Swenson scored the first two points of the half at the 15:45 mark to pull the Rebels to within ten. Dylan Kluis followed this up with a nice transition bucket. He sprinted the outside lane, caught the ball on the right wing, and attacked the baseline for the nice hanging layup. WWG answered back, pushing the lead to 10 again.
Hudson Schryvers cut the lead to 7 after drilling a left wing three, before WWG earned a trip to the foul line. Free throws turned out to be a big separator in this ball game, as the Chargers shot 22-29 from the foul line to the Rebels 5-8.
MCC cut the lead to 5 off another Schyrvers bucket. Hudson had a team high 21 points on the night. Then the two teams went back and forth over the next couple of possessions, as the Chargers kept their lead around the 7-9 margin until the 10 minute mark. This is when WWG went on a big run, bumping their lead up to 19 points with just under 6 minutes remaining.
But the Rebels fought back. Schryvers drilled a top of the
