RTR 52 - MCC 40

The Murray County Central Rebel Girls played this past Thursday night in Tyler. The Rebels and the Knights played back on December 3rd and the Knights came up with the win by seven points. The Rebels were hoping to not let the Knights get such a large lead in this second meeting and pull off the win. The Rebels would not get what they wanted but they did give RTR everything they wanted in the second half.

RTR dominated the first half as their defense didn’t allow the Rebels to get into a rhythm. MCC didn’t have as many turnovers as one would expect with a team that likes to pressure full court, but the Rebels struggled to convert on open shots. The Knights got off to a good start, getting a lead in the first few minutes. But six minutes into the game, the Knights opened up a nice lead that would only grow throughout the first half. The Knights didn’t have a standout scorer in the first half or really in the game, but they spread the scoring around throughout the roster. RTR led at the half 34 to 14.

The second half would see Ava Deacon pick up her play on both ends of the floor. Her steals helped lead the Rebels to open shots and on the offensive end she led the Rebels in scoring. MCC put plenty of pressure on the Knights in the second half, but they never got closer than six points. The Rebels matched RTR nearly point for point in the second half, but with some late free throws, RTR beat MCC 52 to 40.

Ava Deacon recorded an impressive double double with 15 points and 10 steals. Thea Schneider scored 8 points and 6 rebounds. Taylor Larson had another solid game with 7 points and a team high 9 rebounds. The Rebels shot just 24% from the field, but what really cost the Rebels was the poor three point shooting, which is usually a Rebel strength. MCC made just 3 of 24 three point shots which is 13%.

Adalia Matzner led the Knights with 10 points. Matzner was the only player in double figures for RTR, but 8 different players scored. MCC will be back in action at home Tuesday night against RRC.
