The Rebels traveled to Marshall this past weekend to participate in the Jimmy John’s Classic. Pool play Friday night was against Hutchinson and Brandon-Evansville, two competitive teams. MCC’s first match up against Hutchinson started off rocky. The Rebels allowed their opponent to jump ahead early in the set. Defensively, MCC struggled throughout and Hutchinson easily took the first game 11-25. The Rebels started off the second set much better. MCC’s offense and serving was dominant and their defense quickly came back around. Hutchinson fought back and made the Rebels earn each and every point. MCC was able to come out on top for game two 25-23. The final set started off well again for MCC. The Rebels gained a four point advantage, but struggled to keep it. MCC made multiple errors in a row up at the net which cost them the game 11-15. MCC’s next matchup was against the Brandon-Evansville Chargers. The Rebels started the first set with a few defensive errors. The girls eventually bounced back midway through the game with better passing and big swings at the net. Both teams fought equally throughout the set, but the Chargers came out on top 23-25. MCC started off set two with a big lead. The Rebels were more consistent with their serve receive and digging. Each and every player was having a great game, which made for an easy 25-10 win. Game three started off poorly again for the Rebels. They allowed their opponent to gain a large lead early on in the set. Even though they fought back, MCC fell 11-15.
With two losses Friday night, MCC was placed in the White tournament bracket. This bracket had to be altered due to two teams dropping out of the tournament last minute. The Rebels faced off against Renville County West to start the day. The first set started off with great rallies back and forth by both teams. MCC gained the upper hand midway through the set with aggressive offensive action. The Rebels continued to push at RCW and took the set 25- 19. Game two started off in favor of MCC and that carried throughout the set. The Rebels held the momentum and took set two from RCW 25-21. MCC had a one game break, which gave them an opportunity to scout their next opponent, Lakeview. Game one started off slow for both Lakeview and MCC. The teams went point for point, until the Rebels gained an advantage with their dominant performance at the net. MCC took the win in game one 25-19. The second set started off with a huge 7-0 lead for the Rebels. The girls continued to play with intensity and energy and easily took game two 25-15. MCC’s final match up of the tournament was against the Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Fighting Saints. Both teams went into the match undefeated in play on Saturday. The Rebels played extremely well in the first set with ace serves and big swings at the net. MCC took game one 25-18. Game two started off well for the Rebels again, but the Fighting Saints lived up to their names and fought tough. MCC made a few small errors throughout the set, and that was the point difference in the end. KMS took set two over the Rebels 22-25. The third set would determine who would win the White bracket. MCC took the early lead, but struggled to hold on to it. Rebel errors allowed KMS to take the advantage midway through the set. The teams battled, but in the end it was KMS who was victorious, winning 12-15 over MCC.
The Rebels ended the tournament with a 2nd place finish in the White bracket behind KMS. MCC’s Kiana Felber and Ciera Tutt played exceptionally well in the back row serve receiving. Felber also let the team in digs for the weekend. From the serving line MCC was dominant with 27 aces. Emily Rohrer played phenomenal offense throughout the weekend tallying 62 kills. Overall MCC played some of their best ball this weekend, and will hopefully use that momentum and confidence as they wrap up their conference season.
