After losing their first game of the week to the WWG Chargers on Tuesday night (September 25), the MCC Rebels Volleyball team was back in action on the road Thursday at Edgerton Public High School for another Red Rock Conference showdown. The Red Rock had been a wild conference in volleyball this season with two or three teams at the top of the standings, followed by a group of teams that can win or lose night in and night out. Thursday the Rebels would get the win in straight sets.
In set one, the Rebels took the early lead and they held the lead for the entire first set. The Flying Dutchmen would close the gap but the Rebels stayed in front. Erynn Rohrer was strong in the service game, while the Rebels had some balance in their attack. MCC held on for a 25 to 18 win. Set 2 was a back and forth contest with the game tied at 12-12. Suttyn Schryvers put the Rebels in front 19 to 12 with a strong service game, which included some strong net play by Kat Miller. Edgerton Public would not give up, closing the gap. But the Rebels took the second set 25 to 20 on a kill by Suttyn Schryvers.
Set 3 started out in favor of Edgerton who led 14 to 11. Edgerton stayed strong into the late portion of the game, staying out front by 2 points. Edgerton led 20 to 18 over the Rebels. That’s when the Rebels made a comeback. Suttyn Schryvers was again at the service line and she put the Rebels ahead 22 to 20. MCC was leading 24 to 21 when Reese Gilbertson ended the game with a kill to give the Rebels the 25 to 21 win.
The Rebels showed great balance on offense. Five different players had 4 or more kills in the game. The team was led by Schryvers with 7 kills and Gilbertson with 6. Kate Blankenship had 20 digs in the game to lead the Rebels with Ava Deacon finishing with 16. Addy Dierks and Erynn Rohrer had 13 assists each in the win.
The Rebels will play Tuesday night in Tyler before traveling to Marshall for another weekend tournament on Friday and Saturday.
