LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Chairman Clarke and Board Members Fulda School District 505, I was surprised to read an article in the local paper with the information that the contract of your Superintendent will not be extended next year. While I am a resident of Nobles County, my home is in the Fulda School District. In my most recent notice of Proposed Property Taxes 2026 from Nobles County almost 60% of the total was school levies and it was substantial.

I followed the proposed school addition/remodel carefully since I managed similar projects as a construction manager for the past twenty years. Most recently at the Adrian and Tracy schools and in the past at Jackson, Pipestone, Windom and SW Minnesota State University.

I met with the Superintendent three times to discuss the scope of work, attended a very informative public meeting and met some of the Board members. After the public meeting I had a productive discussion with several of the principals of the design team from your Construction Management firm.

Based on my confidence in the people involved, I voted in favor of the referendum. However, my main reason was the knowledge, enthusiasm and the take charge attitude that your Superintendent conveyed in our discussions.

From what I read in the article, it appears that there is broad support for retaining Mr. Pagel. My experience has convinced me that his input and direction would be critical in completing a successful construction project. Without his guidance, I believe that the Board may be putting the success of the project at risk. $30 million in voter approved funds should be reasonable justification for further conversations.

Since the paper said the vote was 4 to 3, I would suggest that the Board reflect on your decision and revisit the issue again. It would also be prudent for the Board members to review their Fiduciary Responsibilities as trustees for the public, most importantly, Financial Stewardship.

Sincerely Yours, Tom Hendel, Dundee
