LETTER TO THE EDITOR

National Volunteer Week was established in 1974. This year, it is the week of April 20-26th and recognizes the kindness, courage and strength of individuals who volunteer their time and efforts without expecting anything in return.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and commend the members of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 64 of Slayton. First and foremost, our focus as Unit members is to support our Veterans through our projects and programs. Members visit Veterans in a local care center or assist them in their homes whenever needed. Each year the Unit travels to the MN VA Home in Luverne for bingo and to serve refreshments.

Community involvement is extensive. They are involved in Meals on Wheels, Food Shelf, Hospice House and Hospice garage sale. Others will sew quilts for Veterans or the less fortunate or assist the elderly with shopping, running errands or devote time to visit.

For American Education Week, the teachers, support staff and bus drivers were given a candy bar and a note of appreciation for their dedication to the youth in the community. The Unit financially supports the local Firefighter Auxiliary, MCC Scholarship program and Girls State. The Unit sponsored Theran Mannon for Girls State this year. The American Legion Auxiliary, Department of MN awarded a scholarship to Charity Kunselman, a member of our Unit.

Before Memorial Day, members will distribute poppies and place Auxiliary and American flags on graves. On Memorial Day, they will participate in the ceremonies at the local cemeteries and provide refreshments prior to the program at the school.

During the holiday season, support is given to Toys for Tots and local organizations that insure that others have a better Christmas. Two members delivered small containers of candy to a nursing home and assisted living facility. They also delivered baskets of fruit and cookies to members within the community.

I have only touched on a number of programs of Erwin March Unit 64. It is because of their dedication and support of not only our Veterans, but the community that as Unit President I want to say thank you and congratulations on a job well done.

Sharon McClure President, Unit 64
