Veterans in Murray County were honored in a number of ways, including Veterans Day programs at Fulda and Murray County Central Schools.
The program in Fulda was at the high school gymnasium and was organized by the Fulda FCCLA Chapter. Featured was patriotic music by elementary, junior high and high school students.
In Slayton, a program at the MCC High School featured musical selections as well, and guest speaker Bob Veenhuis, who served in the US Navy from 1980 to 2000. A majority of his career was spent in the nuclear submarine program.
Veterans in Slayton were escorted to their seating by school-aged family members and a fourth-grader.
Each school played the Armed Forces Medley, allowing Veterans from their service branch to stand while “their” song was being played.
In Fulda, elementary students and staff had prepared cards of thanks during their Raider Time groups, and those cards were presented to the veterans during the program.
The students also shared cards of thanks with veterans who attended the Avoca American Legion dinner.
The Slayton American Legion has hosted the annual meal for many years, but this year Slayton American Legion Commander Brad Pagel said it was time to move things around the county.
Hosting the event in Avoca, Post Commander Tom Sommers said was an honor. It also tied in nicely with the Avoca American Legion Gun Raffle. Winning tickets were plucked out of the tumbler during the event.
Assisting with the meal preparation was Shane Johansen and his cook Jason from the Grain Exchange.
“His help was amazing,” Sommers said. “When he volunteered to help, he told me, ‘Anything for the Veterans.’” After the meal, Pagel announced names of the Legion members being noted for their years of membership.
Ten-year membership certificates were awarded to Dave Kremer, Bruce Freeburg and Jerry Moline; a 20--year certificate was awarded to Warren Hanson; Charles Benda was honored for 30 years and Ron Heidebrink for 35 years.
The Slayton American Legion Auxiliary noted the long-time service of Chaplin Shirley Carlson and awarded certificates to Fran Carlson for 35 years and Sheila Leonard for 44 years.
