GREEN THUMB

Your garden should be doing well.

We’re still getting emails from the garden supply houses. General seeds are usually still available. We hear about the second garden to get planted to give you fresh produce from now until freeze up. Also bulbs and other plants can get planted now so they are ready for winter and future years. Some items will be shipped now and some when fall planting arrives. In the meantime, remember most towns have at least one day a week for farmer’s markets. In years past Slayton’s meant the market would open early in the morning and the best items would be sold out by 10 am. We note Marshall has two market days. The normal one is Saturday mornings (starting about 7:30 am) with a second market Tuesdays 4 - 6 pm. Check your local community for days and best times.

Some market gardeners are selling their surplus and some are commercial gardeners doing it for family income. And we’ve already mentioned sweet corn stands, which have much more than just sweet corn.

Back home the rains are keeping your garden watered. And on dry days you need to hoe the weeds as well as pick your own produce.

Lastly, be sure to care for your house plants as well as those you put outside for the summer. Don’t get too sunburned while you are doing your yard and gardening.

Until next week.
