GREEN THUMB

We are still in planning our gardening (and yard work) for this new year. This week we will talk on gardening tools and plants. Now is a good time. Usually your garden tools (rake, hoe, shovel, etc) are in the garage and easy to find and inspect. There will be sales of garden tools soon enough. What will you need new this year?

In years past, when all towns had a blacksmith shop, we got to take in the hoe and had them sharpen it. Made hoeing much easier. In checking the garden catalogues there are other things too.

The catalogues request early orders. Not just seeds. Also please order started plants too. They will be shipped when the garden is ready to plant.

Started plants will also be available locally from area greenhouses. They might like advance orders too, so they know which plants to have ready, along with what varieties their customers want.

And then there was our Duluth uncle who started growing his plants in the basement. This took several deep cake pans and the special fluorescent bulbs for plants.

And then there’s yard plants - rose bushes for example. And trees – fruit and otherwise. This will give you something to do when watching the snowstorms outside.

Be sure to water your house plants too. Until next week.
