By Arnold Krusemark There used to be a television program called This was the Week that Was. That almost described this past week.
One morning it was snowing now mostly gone. Then the tree leaves started falling. Nearly all gone now.
Maybe its Indian summer the warmth after the first cold spell which permitted the Indians to get their outside work done before real winter set in.
We’ve talked in past columns about what still needs doing. Some gets done early but some always gets done just under thr blast of winter (or other weather change).
The root crops (potatoes, carrots, beets, and related) can still wait a little bit longer. This writer remembers digging things in the garden with snow coming down. Then we settle down for winter.
Mother used to say their family had to survive on what they had stored up. Father worked seasonal work (carpenter). The family had to survive on what they had in the cellar. The one exception was occasionally they would get a quart of milk (5c or 7c in those days).
Times have changed somewhat. But getting ready for Winter is still with us to do.
You might check Farmers’ Market - first if it is still going and then stock up on what you can used during thr winter.
We’ve mentioned Burpees weekly emails. Lately they have mentioned gifts for gardeners a gift certificate for one thing.
For the family be sure they had winter clothes ready. The same for the car, the house and whatever.
We used to say that thre snow which came for Thanksgiving stayed the winter. The first snow is gone now, but more will come.
And then the holidays. More about that as time passes.
Until next week.
