GREEN THUMB

By Arnold Krusemark Several events have now passed. While our days are nice we are starting to get colder days. One night recently it got down to 39 degrees (but up to 90 a day or two later). We will have good growing days for a while yet but probably not below freezing until November. Also Monday, September 22nd about 1 pm it became Autumn. No real change in much yet but the days are getting shorter. And will until in December.

Burpees are continuing their numerous weekly emails selling seeds for your fall gardening. And some good sales too. Back home you should spend some time (during rainy days or two) cleaning out the garage and downstairs pantry. Then when its time to fetch the remaining garden produce space is ready.

And if your garden produce is insufficient, remember the Farmer’s Markets. If you have children be sure you have a pumpkin to carve for Halloween. Remaining pumpkins and squashes will also help winter meals.

We have also mentioned doing the remaining outside planting of bushes and plants to yield Spring flowers and whatever else. Finally your lawn may need another mowing or two before winter freezes arrive.

It may be a good time to refill the furnace fuel oil tank. And have a service call too, just to make sure the furnace is ok for another winter. Do it now rather then as an emergency. For farmers, be sure the heater in the well house is ok. If not check for milk house heaters on sale. We always get 2 at a time (one for now and the other a spare). On your car check your tires too. In years past we had to change tires when winter came. This should keep you busy for a while. Then water your house plants too.

Until next week.
