GREEN THUMB

Another week has passed. July is done. And then August. And August will have the Murray County Fair with its festivities.

This year the Fair will take up almost a week. This writer can remember our earlier fairs. Then they lasted three days (Thursday through Saturday). Sunday got added for a grandstand show.

Now it starts on Monday and runs until Saturday. Nowadays there is also a parade in downtown Slayton.

We’ve told some of our family stories about the Fair in past years’ columns. At least attendance (and parking) are now free. They were paid attendance and paid parking in earlier years.

As for our garden at home, we now start looking at what we might be able to exhibit in the Fair. One relative depended on the fair prize money to add to the grocery expenses and the garden to the dinner table.

Farmers’ Market is now in full swing. So are sweet corn stands. This week we met a truck full of corn headed for the area cannery.

Don’t forget to have an umbrella handy too. Until next week.
