GET THE DIRT

By Kathy Schwartz, Murray County Master Gardener The best time to dethatch is mid-August through September. The best time to aerate is mid-August through October.

Reduce fertilizer applications to allow perennials, shrubs and trees to harden off before cooler weather.

At the end of the season, when most of your onion stalks have weakened and fallen, push any remaining ones over or walk on them. When all stalks are dry, pull the onion. Spread them on the ground to dry for several days. Trim the stem to one inch. Store in a cool, dry place (prevents rotting) or keep refrigerated.
