The Fulda/MCC Warriors travelled to Springfield on Dec. 17th and swept all three duals in a Quadrangular meet. First up were the Sibley East Wolverines and Luke Sweetman at (107) started out the scoring with a quick pin in the first period, putting up 6 for the Warriors against Damian Diaz.

Next up at 114 for the Warriors 8th grader Ivan Olsem took on Hunter Deno and lost by pinfall, trading 6 for the team. Adam Iverson proved to be a tough opponent against Bravan Martinez, going the distance, only allowing a major decision to the Wolverines.

The Wolverines had an open weight at 121 giving a forfeit to Kaston Clarke. Then Teague Meyer took Gage Harstman down and finished him off with a pinning combination in the first period, putting the Warriors on top 18-10.

The Warriors Hunter Reese and Kaden Landsman found some tough competition in the 139 and 145 bouts, losing both by pinfall and giving the lead back to the Wolverines 18-22.

After an open weight forfeit to Noah Mathiowetz the confident Quintin Lewis stepped up and scored 6 for the Warriors against Atley Strack, with a fall in the first period. With open weights in the 172 and 189 bouts, the Warriors piled on leading up to Carson Klein over Gianny Lopez at 215. Colby Kesteloot followed suit, scoring a decision against Alex Cardenas. With a final score of 51-22 the Warriors walked away with a solid victory.

Next up were the Wabasso Rabbits and a test for the Warriors, as they are fielding a full team. First up was Luke Sweetman at 107 against Levi Gladitsche. Sweetman took Gladitsche down off the whistle on the edge of the mat to score the initial 3 point take down. Then starting on top in referees position, he worked Gladitsche into a butcher and stuck him to the center of the mat, scoring 6 for the Warriors with only 13 seconds left in the first period.

The Warriors traded points with the Rabbits as the young Ivan Olsem fell to Lane Taylor, only to be followed by Kaston Clarke at 121. Clarke, missing on an ankle pick, caught Taylor’s body and returned him to the mat for the take down, then started working a cradle, scoring 3 back points, then changed positions, skunking a half and holding a cross body arm, pinned Taylor for the 6 team points.

Now 12-6 the Warriors are off to a good start, but a decision was made and the 127 weight was left open. The Warriors were tied with the Rabbits going into the 133 bout, where Teague Meyer met Zach Skoblik. Meyer, on all fours, held his place on the mat reaching for the head, looking for an opening while fighting off Skoblik’s attempts. After a full 2 minutes of hand fighting with neither wrestler finding a good opening, the boys found themselves in the 2nd period. Meyer started on top in referees position, allowing Skoblik an escape. The third period, Meyer started on bottom referees position, searching for an escape and Skoblik wasn’t courteous. Meyer had to earn it. Finally, tying the match up with an escape, Meyer knew he had to win it and, after studying Skoblik for four minutes, Meyer knew his opening. Meyer, shucking to the right, got in on Skoblik’s right ankle and took him to the mat for a takedown, scoring three and getting a good 4-1 lead. Meyer got caught clasping for a penalty point and allowed Skoblik an escape narrowing the gap 4-3, but Meyer held on for the win fighting off every attempt by Skoblik and winning a tought match.

Next up was Brayden Gilb wrestling at a tough 139 pound weight, taking on Mikale Goblirsch. Gilb got in on a leg early, but Goblirsch fought it off and ended up with the takedown out of the scramble and turned Gilb with a two on one for a four point nearfall. After a potentially dangerous call, the boys started in the center and Gilb, from the bottom, sat out and turned in, catching an ankle, scoring a 2 point reversal and a 3 point nearfall. Gilb, looking for a turn, opened the window for Goblirsch who scored 2 on a reversal at the end of the period. Gilb, starting the 2nd period down 9-5, felt a sense of urgency, starting neutral and defending a shot by Goblirsch with a whizzer, put Goblirsch to the mat and secured a head lock that wasn’t defendable and scored the 6 with a pin.

After a loss at 145 by pinfall the Warriors lead was dwindling and then another loss at 152 but this time Noah Mathiowetz took Truman Gilbertson the distance. The score was tied. The Warriors knew their backs weren’t against a wall as Quintin Lewis strolled out onto the mat at 160 against Gavin Marotzke. With the score tied, the dual felt like it was on the line and Q started out strong getting a high crotch bringing Marotzke to the mat on his back, then getting a tight cradle, pinned Marotzke putting the Warriors up 27-21.

At 172 Jaxon Wendorff after suffering a takedown by Nolan Hanson scored on a sit out and got Hanson into a cradle, scoring 6 total points. Then starting on top in the referees position, Jaxon scored 4 more with a knuckle roll armbar, ending the 1st period with a good 10 –3 lead. The 2nd period was all Hanson with an early take down and nearfall of which Wendorff would earn an escape only to be followed with another takedown and pinning combination by Hanson, who would eventually win by pinfall.

Carson Klein at 189, who had kind of a Tarzan build to him drew Zeke Olson of the Rabbits. Klein was nearly taken down, but undeterred, used Olson’s offense against him. Putting a whizzer on, put Olson on his back scoring a takedown and a 4 point nearfall. Klein rode out the remainder of the first period looking for a turn then started the 2nd period on bottom scoring a quick escape. Klein got in on a leg and scored a takedown out of the scramble, then got a Witzel and scored 4 on a nearfall, winning the match by technical fall. 15-0 Isaiah Wolske at 215 had a long 2 minute first period with handfighting. Defering the coin flip to his opponent Mason Kampsen, the wrestlers started neutral in the 2nd. Kampsen got in on a single, but Wolske held on to the whizzer, causing a stalemate. Still neutral, Wolske, from a front headlock put his head in Kampsens ribs and spun around to secure the takedown. Wolske started down in the third period and quickly earned his escape. He was looking for more after a lot of handfighting at the end of the 3rd period. Wolske finally got in on another front headlock and spun around Kampsen scoring the 3, winning the match with a decision and securing the win for the Warriors.

Colby Kesteloot had Josh Timm at 285 and after handfighting throughout the first period, Colby got to work in the 2nd, earning a quick escape from referees position, scoring the takedown and the eventual fall, making the final score 4127 Warriors.

Next up were the Springfield Tigers and Luke Sweetman was the first horse out of the stable, scoring quickly on a single and pinning Brett Jensen with a reverse half.

After a loss by pinfall at 114, Adam Iverson earned 6 team points receiving a forfeit, making the score 12-6. At 127 Kaston Clarke drew Cole Paplow and with a single leg, scored the first takedown and we went into the second period 3-0 Clarke. The second period was all Clarke again as he won the toss and chose neutral, allowing Paplow an escape point. Clarke took Paplow down and worked him to the edge of the mat and pinned him with a skunked half, putting the Warriors up 18-6.

Meyer, at 133, had Nathan Groebner and took him down at the whistle with a smooth ankle pick. Meyer, with a monkey tail, scored a 4 point nearfall before pinning Groebner in a half nelson making the score 24-6.

Brayden Gilb put on a takedown clinic against Nick Groebner at 139, waiting until 33 seconds into the 2nd period before getting the fall. 30-6 After a forfeit to Truman Olsem at 145 Kaden Landsman took on Stan Heiling at 152. Kaden Landsman suffered a takedown early in the first period, but quickly earned his escape and scored a takedown of his own with a head in the hole. Heiling responded quickly with a reversal and again Landsman scored on an escape and another head in the hole takedown. The second period for Landsman started with Heiling in bottom position and Landsman scored a nearfall. Heiling kept the match going earning an escape, but Landsman kept scoring. With a single leg he took Heiling to the mat, working an armbar. The third period starting neutral, Landsman defended a headlock giving up 5 on a nearfall for injury time. Landsman went on to win the match 16-22 in a decision, making the team score 39-6.

After two open weights at 160 and 172 to Noah Mathiowetz and Jaxon Wendorff, Isaiah Wolske at 189 took 1:31 to pin Rylee Haala. Isaiah’s bigger, yet younger brother, Gabriel Wolske defeated Hank Heiling in 42 seconds with a restart and an knuckle roll half out of referees position.

The Warriors performed well at the Redwood River Riot December 20th and 21st taking 11th place as a team out of 34 teams, putting 4 wrestlers on the podium. Kaston Clarke earned 3rd place at 114, Quintin Lewis 6th at 160, Carson Klein 5th at 189 and Colby Kesteloot 7th at 215.
