The F/MCC Warriors on Saturday, January 10 traveled to Sheldon, Iowa for the team dual tournament, which was comprised of 6 teams. The Warriors saw some good competition and fared very well, coming in at a close second to Logan-Magnolia of Iowa.

The Warriors first opponent of the day was the Sheldon-South O’Brien Orabs.

I didn’t know what an Orab was, so I looked it up. Google says, “An ‘Orab’ most commonly refers to the mascot of Sheldon High School in Iowa, a portmanteau of the school colors, Orange and Black, stemming from a 1920 yearbook contest.” Oh, how times have changed...

The Warriors had their way with the Orabs, with a 47-31 final score.

After a forfeit at 106, Luke Sweetman at 113 scored 6 with a pin against Owen Beier in 47 seconds. Kaston Clarke at 120 followed with a 24-second pin of his own against Dominic Rounds. After giving up a fall at 132 to Yordi Oliveros, Curtis Johnson at 138 quickly fired back with a first period pin, keeping the Warriors in the lead 2412. Brayden Gilb at 144 went into the third period with Cael Christians, scoring a technical fall 20-3. Jordan Vortherms at 150 kept piling on with a thirdperiod pin. After a score of 16-4, Vortherms had the lead. Lucas Kuball at 157 pinned Marshall Warnke with 20 seconds left in the first period.

Quintin Lewis at 165 scored 12 points, then recorded a fall with 20 seconds left in the second period. Jaxon Wendorff at 175 fell to Kolt Roos and Luke Iverson fell to Mitchel Fischer.

At 215, Levi Lewis went the distance with Ayden Miller, scoring a nearfall from the top position in the third period and a takedown, but it wasn’t quite enough, giving up the 13-8 decision. Gabe Wolske also went the distance, with a match score of 17-4, giving up a major decision. The Warriors held on for the win, with a final score against the Orabs of 31-47.

Next up were the TMB Panthers - with a more familiar nickname - and the Warriors had their way. After a forfeit at 106, Luke Sweetman with a knuckle roll half-pinned Owen Beier tying the score 6-6. At 120, Kaston Clarke put Lane Hoffman on his back, scoring another 6 for the Warriors. Yordi Oliveros was pinned by Taylor Squires, Curtis Johnson was pinned by Weston Martin in the third period, and a forfeit to David Schuh gave the Panthers an advantage 30-12 going into the upper The hammers started falling for the Warriors as Brayden Gilb took Nolan Verlinde on a takedown clinic in the first period, finishing the period 10-2. Gilb suffered a nearfall in the second period starting on bottom.

The third period started neutral. Gilb suffered two takedowns and an escape, but his reversal gave him the 12-11 nail biter decision. At 157, Truman Olsem gave up a 7 point move off the whistle against Tyler Arnold, but got his escape followed by a 7-point move of his own, finishing the period on top 8-7. In the second period starting neutral, Olsem suffered a takedown but reversed, and with a deep half scored the fall, bringing the Warriors closer 2130.

Lucas Kuball at 165 put Jaxter Pfarr in a hammerlock to score the fall 27-30. Quintin Lewis at 175 put Maverick Snyder in a double chickenwing for another fall 33-30, giving the lead back to the Warriors. Luke Iverson kept the flow with a nearfall against Witzel in the first period, then in the second period after a reversal, scooping the head of Lowton Verlinde for the pin 39-30 Warriors. Vincent Bray took no prisoners, putting Adam Hippe in a headlock and scoring the fall on the whistle 45-30. Colby Kesteloot pinned Jack Willhite to round out the top with a final score 51-30.

Storm Lake was next with an open weight at 106. Luke Sweetman filled his role nicely at 113, pinning Devin Xiong. This was followed by a 3 period battle by Thomas Pruitt, winning his match in a 10-8 decision. Kaston Clark scored a fall at 126, putting the Warriors up 15-6. Classes 132 and 138 brought losses by fall to Yordie Oliveros and Curtis Johnson, giving the Tornadoes the lead 18-15. Brayden Gilb scored a techfall at 144, followed by a pin by Truman Olsem and Lucas Kuball. This gave the Warriors a big advantage 32-18.

After Daniel Navario suffered a fall, Jaxon Wendorff and Luke Iverson made up for it with backto- back pins. Levi Lewis at 215 got caught under his opponent in the first period giving up a fall, but Gabe Wolske made up for it at heavyweight, scoring a second period fall and giving the Warriors the win 50-30.

Logan-Magnolia was the match of the day, as it brought a much closer score. The Warriors in the first 3 matches got a forfeit and pins to Luke Sweetman and Thomas Pruitt. Kaston Clarke got 6 back at 126, followed by a third period fall loss to Brantley Klein at 132. Curtis Johnson at 138 held Max Wingert to a major decision loss, making the score 29-6. At 144, Brayden Gilb pinned Jaxson Walker in 1 minute. Lucas Kuball tried to pin Charles Brown at 157, but Brown wasn’t having it and they went the distance with Kuball earning the major decision.

With a score of 16-34 going into the last 5 matches, the Warriors had their work cut out for them. Quintin Lewis made short work of his opponent, scoring a 45 second pin. Jaxon Wendorff went the distance in a roller coaster of a match, with a final score of 20-15. Jaxon scored the decision for the Warriors (25-34), Luke Iverson at 190 scored another 6, scooping the head out of a reversal (31-34). Vincent Bray gave everything he had going the distance but coming up short, losing by major decision 13-2 at 215. This nullified the last match with a team score of 31-38. Even a pin by Kesteloot wouldn’t bring the Warriors back. Kesteloot would prevail, going the distance at 285 and winning by a 7-1 decision. The final team score was 34-38.

Sioux Central would round out the day. The Warriors took it by a landslide, with George Rosenbrook collecting a forfeit win, Luke Sweetman recording a fall, and Thomas Pruitt recording a forfeit. Kaston Clarke earned a decision, and Brantley Klein took a forfeit. Adam Iverson at 138 went the distance, but fell short, losing by an 8-12 decision.
