By Crystal Reith Following the 2025 Avoca Fun in the Sun street dance, festival organizers gathered to brainstorm fundraising ideas for next year’s event.
“The four of us had a meeting and talked about different ways to make money over the course of the winter,” said Marni Larsen, of Avoca. “Someone had the idea of to-go meals for farmers and all the proceeds would go to the Fun in the Sun weekend.”
The Avoca Community Club, consisting of Larsen, Dave Brown, Jamie Wildfeuer and Laura Schleusner, held a beef commercial fundraiser on September 27 and served around 100 meals. The group will hold another to-go meal fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 11. This time, the to-go meal will consist of a smoked pork tenderloin sandwich with cheesy potatoes and a cookie for $11.
“To order a meal, call the Avoca Bar at 507-335-7812 or Laura Schleusner at 712-4706033,” Larsen. “We will start serving at 11 a.m. and serve until the food is gone. Pick up at the bar or we can deliver to the grain elevator if you call and let us know when you are going to be there.”
The committee is working on future fundraisers which includes Friday evening trivia during the winter at the Avoca Bar. As the group works on additional fundraisers, they invite anyone interested in joining the committee to reach out to a current member.
“If anyone wants to be involved or has great ideas and wants to be part of the planning, get a hold of one of the committee members and get signed up to help,” said Larsen.
This past summer, the committee organized Fun in the Sun days which consisted of a vendor fair at the hall, activities for kids, a street dance, car show and a volleyball and a kickball tournament.
In addition to organizing the town’s celebration, the committee is excited to announce that they are planning a new recreational area at the Avoca city park that will feature a fishing dock and swimming area.
