DINEHART LUNCHBOX LECTURE TO HOST DAN PETERSON, ON HIS BOOK “TAKINI: THE STORY OF JULIA SILSBY (WRIGHT/LLOYD/ COLE).”
The Murray County Historical Society invites the public to attend its February Lunchbox Lecture on Thursday, February 13th, 2025, in the 4-H building on the Murray County Fairgrounds in Slayton starting at noon. This month’s lecture will feature local historian Dan Peterson.
Dan Peterson will be speaking about his new book “Takini: The Story of Julia Silsby (Wright/Lloyd/Cole).” Dan’s Book tells the story of Mrs. Julia Wright who was taken captive along with her two children by the Dakota at Lake Shetek on August 20, 1862. After almost three months of captivity Julia and her daughter Eldora were ransomed by the Fool Soldiers in Dakota Territory. Her son George had been rescued earlier at Camp Release. The story did not have a happy ending with Julia and her husband John Wright divorcing. Her daughter Eldora died shortly after gaining her freedom and George was kept by his father. Julia disappeared from the history books. This book picks up the trail of Julia and tells about short her life from beginning to end. The mystery of Julia Wright has been solved all these years later.
The cost of the talk is $3.00 per person or Historical Society members get in free. Attendees are welcome to bring their own lunch. Refreshments and light snacks are provided. For more information about this and other museum events, call 507836-6533 or email museum@co.murray.mn.us
