CONSTRUCTION READY TO BEGIN ON VALHALLA ROAD

After long months of planning, construction on Valhalla Road and the dikes leading out to Keeley Island on Lake Shetek will soon be underway.

Scheduled to begin immediately after the 4th of July holiday weekend, the project is slated to last through October. These dates are weather dependent. The road will be widened to two 12-foot lanes with 4-foot shoulders, and along Dikes 1, 2 and 3 the road will be raised. The county is hoping to avoid flooding issues that were experienced during the 2018 rains.

A shared-use path will run from US 59 to Keeley Island and provide safe access to biking, walking and fishing from shore. Murray County Sheriff Heath Landsman said golf carts will not be able to use the shared-use path, but should instead use the roadway.

The week of July 7th, work will start with sheet piling being installed so the work crew can remove the bridge and install the box culvert on the second dike. As work on the road commences, efforts will be made to reduce dust by leaving pavement in place as long as possible.

According to the Murray County Highway Department, one lane will be open during construction, other than short delays when equipment or materials are being moved. Efforts will be made by the county to keep the public informed in the event short road closures are necessary.
