Question: I know you were talking about winter safety tips in your last article. Can you go over the items a person should have in their vehicle when traveling in the winter?
Answer: When assembling a winter travel survival kit, it’s best to include a variety of items that prepare you for cold, isolation, and unexpected delays. Even if you keep the kit in your vehicle yearround, review it regularly to make sure everything is in good condition and still in its proper place. A winter trave s rvival kit should focus on warmth, traction, communication, and basic supplies.
Winter Travel Survival Kit Essentials: Warmth
• Extra blankets or a sleeping bag
• Warm hats, gloves, socks, and scarves
• Hand and foot warmers
• Emergency thermal (space) blanket Traction & Vehicle Safety
• Ice scraper and snow brush
• Small shovel
• Sand, cat litter, or traction mats
• Tire chains (if appropriate for your area)
• Jumper cables Communication & Visibility
• Fully charged power bank and charging cables
• Flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries
• Reflective vest or roadside flares
• Whistle for signaling
• Paper and pencil(s) to leave note/message Basic Supplies
• Non-perishable food and snacks
