The Fulda/Murray County Central Warriors hosted the KMS Saints and the Wabasso Rabbits Friday February 4th. The Kerkhoven/Murdock/Sundberg Saints are a powerhouse of wrestling in west central Minnesota and always have excellent teams. The last time the Warriors had a dual against KMS the score was 72-0, but on Friday it was a different story as the Warriors held their own and closed the gap with a final score of 29-45.
Teague Meyer was the first horse out of the Warrior stable and was put up against 8th grader Colton Noble. The first period was all Meyer securing two takedowns, first a double leg and then an outside single each with hard cuts trying to break Noble early. The second period found Meyer on top in the referees position and riding the entire period ended with a stall warning for Noble. With a clasping point early against Noble, Teague earned his escape and out of a strong tie put Nobles head to the mat and scored a third takedown with a head in the hole go behind. 3-0
Torrin Clark got the nod to wrestle #1 in the state at 106 Trey Gunderson and wrestled tough only giving up two takedowns in the first period showing off some good defense. The second period went to Gunderson with a reversal followed by a fall in a knuckle roll armbar.3-6
Eighth grader Lucas Kuball against 11th grader Noah Johnson at 120 started good as Lucas comes to the mat with a fierce attitude looking to display his trade. Johnson with the first takedown looking to turn Kuball early gave up an escape as Kuball was able to get free by turning out and sitting in keeping hand control got back to the neutral position. Johnson the took Kuball down again as Kuball didn’t get the whizzer in in time. Kuball had some excellent defense against a spladle and earned a penalty point for unsportsmanlike conduct. The second period was all Johnson starting from bottom earning a reversal and putting Kuball in a butcher earning the fall.3- 12KMS
Caleb Rosenbrook went three periods against 7th grader Tayton Nielsen of KMS. After giving up the first takedown Rosenbrook wrestled tough on the bottom only giving up two in the first period. The second period Rosenbrook made an excellent escape scoring his first point from the bottom referees position. Nielson would find another takedown and nearfall in the second making the score 8-2 going into the third period. Rosenbrook held Nielson at bay for a majority of the third period fighting out of a knuckleroll armbar but eventually falling to a pin with only 3 seconds left. Caleb Rosenbrook is a tough, athletic wrestler with a very good takedown and excellent hips to stay on the offense. 3-18
Denver Ash took a forfeit at 132 followed by Aiden Lorenzen at 138 who scored a takedown by an outside single and riding out Logan Johnson for the period. The second period was all Lorenzen earning his escape from bottom and scoring another takedown with a beautiful outside single. Lorenzen picked up the pace in the third period earning a takedown with a beautiful outside single and cutting Johnson allowing an escape to score another takedown which he did and finished on top for a major decision making the score 12- 18 KMS.
Owen Olsom went against 9th grader Jeff Olson and fell by a knuckleroll armbar in the first period.12-24 KMS
Carter Benda at his 152 weight went the distance with senior Ely Johnson. In the first period Johnson got the double underhook and took Benda to the mat for two, but Benda’s superior athleticism gave him an escape and they would hand fight for position for the remainder of the period. The second period Benda earned his escape quickly from the bottom and try a headlock which ended with both wrestlers on the mat and Johnson would score out of the scramble. Benda earned one more escape and got into a good shot but Johnson got the whizzer and defended it Benda wrestled hard to finish the match only giving up a decision at 5-3. 12-21KMS
Devin Landsman had Coy Gunderson and took a fall in the second period making the score 12-27KMS.
Carson Klein drew Aaron Jones of KMS and gave up an early takedown. Jones would get an armbar but Klein got his hips out and nearly ended up on top putting himself into a potentially dangerous position and they would start again at the center where Klein would fight on his belly for the remainder of the period. In the second period Klein would start on the bottom and Jones got another armbar of which Klein defended and ended up on top for a reversal then got his legs in trying to score for the remainder of the period. The third period out of the neutral position Jones took Klein down and this time held onto a turn and got the fall giving KMS 6 more putting them up 33-12.
Christian Kuball made some noise against Masyn Olson going into overtime after allowing Olson to score an escape and a takedown in the third period. Kuball was dominant for most of the match with his takedowns, but Olson was able to take advantage of a couple of mistakes by Kuball especially a reversal in the first period. In overtime there was no doubt that Kuball had it in the bag as his takedown is very hard to defend and he got it early to take the decision for the team. 33-15 KMS
Ryder Henning is a good fit at 195 for the Warriors and going up against Owen Kidrowski he put on an excellent performance taking Kidrowski to the mat with an awesome single leg. Kidrowski was able to escape out of an armbar on the edge of the mat and received a stall warning late in the first. The second period was all Henning as he took Kidrowski to the mat for a take down turned and pinned him putting six up for the Warriors. 22-39 KMS
Rylan Klein received a forfeit and the Warriors were open making the final score 28-45.
The Warriors next dual against the Wabasso Rabbits was full of fireworks in the upper weights as the Warriors took the dual on a pin by Rylan Klein.
Teague Meyer at 106 took on Kaysen Harms and fought for three periods holding Harms to a major decision putting the Rabbits up 4-0.
Torrin Clark at 113 gave up an early takedown to Zach Skoblik and fought with defense for most of the first period. The second period went to Harms starting on the bottom as he earned a reversal and got the double chickenwing in of which Clark was able to defend only allowing a 2 point nearfall. Skoblik got a stall warning by sitting on Clarks ankle in the period as well, making the score 6-1 going into the third period. Clark wrestled with all of his heart in the third period cleaning up the deficit out of the neutral position by getting a solid takedown and putting Skoblik on his back for a three point nearfall. With a score of 5-6 Clark was still behind and need two to put the match into overtime, so the coaches had Clark cut Skoblik allowing an escape point and with a score of 5-7 Clark got the takedown going out the back door between Skobliks legs and the gym erupted. Going into sudden death overtime Clark made the first offensive move and Skoblik defended with offense of his own earning the takedown and getting the win putting the Rabbits ahead 10-0. Torrin Clark really showed up here against Skoblik and although he lost, that third period fight would bolster the rest of the team going forward.
Eighth grader Lucas Kuball wrestling up a weight at 120 against Junior Ashton Weidemann put on an impressive showing in the first period. Kuball after giving up two points on a takedown by Weidemann felt the fire and earned his escape and took Weidemann to the mat with an impressive outside single and working his legs put Weidemanns eyes to the sky in two turns earning a total of 6 back points. Late in the first period Weidermann took advantage of a mistake by Kuball and earned a reversal. The second period had Kuball starting on the bottom and Weidermann’s only offense was a cradle and after trying multiple times it finally stuck and Kuball fell by pinfall putting the Rabbits up 16-0
7th grader Caleb Rosenbrook took the nod against 9th grader Mikale Goblirsch and took a fall at 1:32.22-0 Rabbits
Denver Ash at 132 took on William Flowers and started the fireworks by getting the first takedown on an awesome single leg, but couldn’t stay on top as Flowers earned a reversal tying the score. Flowers took a stall warning and gave up two stalling points trying to hold Ash down, but Ash finally earned his escape making the score 5-2 going into the second. Ash quickly earned his escape from bottom only to give up two to a takedown, but made his escape again and this time he took Flowers to the mat and got a knuckleroll half lost the knuckle roll the reversed his half and got the pin putting the Warriors on the board with 6. 22-6 Rabbits
Owen Olsem at 138 gave up two takedowns and earned 1 escape in the first period against Adryen Tietz, and starting on top in the second period couldn’t get the cradle riding out the entire period. The third period went to Tietz starting on top he turned Olsem and got the pin 33 seconds into the period. 28-6 Rabbits
Aiden Lorenzen wrestling up at 145 gave up a takedown early in the first, but countered and earned his escape. With the fire burning and 45 seconds left in the match on a perfect single leg took Garrett Marotzke down with the half and put him on his back scoring 5 points going into the second period. Lorenzen starting on the bottom earned his escape after being rode for one minute and took Marotzke down again making the score 9-2 going into the third. The third period was all Lorenzen as he scored eight more points with takedowns on a broken Marotzke earning the major decision with a final match score or 17-7. 28-10 Rabbits
Carter Benda at 152 had Preston Remiger and took the chance at a headlock in the first period. It was all Preston could do just to breath as Benda had the grip of a python and held on to the headlock for the pin putting 6 up for the Warriors. 28- 16 Warriors
Carson Klein wrestling up at 160 had Mason Kampen and got a sweet takedown and stole a cradle putting Kampen on his back for a nearfall scoring 5 in the first period. The second period found Klein starting on the bottom where worked his defense for 110 seconds before getting his escape point. The third period Klein on the bottom again worked his offense scoring on his escape and getting the takedown earning another major decision for the team tying the score 20-20.
Devin Landsman fell to Chance Fischer in 36 seconds putting the Rabbits up once again 26-20. Christian Kuball had plans of his own to keep the score close as he took Zeke Olson to the mat in a tight butcher and got the fall in .26 seconds.
With a tie score being the definite underdog eighth grader Kolby Kesteloot took to the mat as sure as January cold and wrestled with his heart. The first period Kolby only gave up 5 points with a takedown and a 2 point nearfall. Senior Sam Welch in frustration threw a hard crossface and gave up a penalty point making the score 4-1 going into the second period. Starting in the neutral position again in the second Welch didn’t give Kolby a chance to get his offense going and put him to the mat again and started trying turns. The Rabbits knowing they needed a pin to keep the dual close threw everything they could at Kolby, but he didn’t lose heart and stayed in good position only giving up four points in the second period. Welch in the third period took Kolby to the mat again but this time couldn’t even get the turn as Kolby’s defense was as solid as a brick wall. Welch in an effort to break Kolby go aggressive and the referee caught it awarding a penalty point to Kolby. With a score of 10-2 Welch had the Major decision tied up but with seconds left he threw another frustration tantrum and gave up another penalty point making the score 10-3. Kolby kept this match to a decision and kept his team in the running by never giving up and fighting with everything he had. This is the best loss I have ever seen and a great testament to what wrestling is. Fighting against adversity and losing you can still come out a winner because you know beyond the shadow of a doubt that you gave it everything. Ryder Henning took a forfeit at 220 making the score 32-34 with the Rabbits in the lead Rylan Klein riding off of Kolby Kesteloots performance was going to make it worth Kolbys effort and he didn’t disappoint. Rylan Klein absolutely owned Chance Ehrlichman in the first period scoring 9 points with two takedowns and two nearfalls. Two wrestlers nearing exhaustion going into the second period Rylan starting on top gave up an escape to chance and in a moment of hesitation by Klein, Ehrlichman took him down with a double leg and swam up for a nearfall with a half nelson. Rylan with his flexibility and desire got his hips up over Ehrlichman for and ended up on top for a reversal and skunked a half getting the pin and the team dual win. With the whole of the crowd and team elated and on their feet in an uproar it was a great moment.
