After a couple meet postponements, the MCC Rebel Track team kicked off the 2022 season as they traveled to Mountain Lake on April 12. What was scheduled as a six team meet ended up being only three as a few teams dropped out due to the weather forecast. Veteran coaches Dominick Damm (girl’s coach) and Tim Bobeldyk (boy’s coach) used this first meet as an opportunity for kids to establish a baseline in their respective events. By the end of day, coaches and athletes alike were happy to be able to get on the track and compete against athletes from other schools.
In the girl’s sprints, seniors Ryanna Schreier, Brailynn Breberg and Chelby Kesteloot lead the way for the Rebels each finishing in the top 5 in the 100 and 200 meter sprints. Schreier, who just missed qualifying for the 2021 state track meet in the 100, took top honors in the 200 while finishing runner up in the 100. Breberg, competing for the first time since seventh grade, took home third in both events while Kesteloot finished 5th in the 100 and 4th in the 200.
The Overgaauw junior twins, Ashley and Amanda, continued where they left off dominating their events as they took top honors in the 400, 800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Amanda won the 400 and 3200 while Ashley came on top in the 800 and 1600.
The boys squad features many new young members but will be led by their senior leaders: Brock Smith, Logan Steinle, Rylan Engelkes, Luk Havermeier, and Ryan Risacher. Smith ran a personal best while winning the 200 meter dash. Steinle took 4th in that same event. Engelkes was runner up in the 400, running a personal best time in that event. Havermeier, a foriegn exchange student competing in his first track meet, took top honors in the shot put. Risacher, coming out for the first time since his freshman year, showed an impressive time in his 300 hurdle debut winning that event.
