The Murray County Central Rebels dropped a game to Edgerton ending their winning streak earlier in the week but on Thursday the Rebels were looking to start a new one. The Rebels hosted the Coyotes of Heron Lake Okabena Fulda for a doubleheader to make up for a game postponed earlier in the year. The Coyotes were looking for their first win of the season and the Rebels were not going to allow that to happen. With both games shortened to 5 innings due to the doubleheader getting out to a quick start is important.
MCC has had a solid season to this point but one thing they have struggled to do is adjust to pitchers. The Rebels will become a more dangerous team when they are quicker to react from one pitcher to another or from one pitch to the next. In the first game the Rebels struggled to adjust to the Coyote pitcher who kept the ball around the plate but didn’t throw very hard. The Rebels would score one run in the first inning Atalie Rosenbrook would single and steal second base. Zoey Iverson would single with two outs, scoring Rosenbrook to put the Rebels ahead. MCC would add another run in the second and third innings Morgan Winter would drive in Jayda Hellewell with a single in the second. Zoey Iverson would hit a sacrifice fly to score Rosenbrook in the third. MCC would blow the game open in the 4th inning with three runs. Thea Schneider would double, driving in two runs and Mary Lou McNab would double in the final run of the game. Thea Schneider would pitch all five innings for the Rebels getting the win 6-2 while striking out 6.
In the second game, Schneider was the story in the circle. After pitching the complete game in game 1 she came back sharper in game 2. Schneider would throw her first career nohitter striking out four batters in the game and walking 2. The Rebels committed two errors in the game but the Coyotes only had one base runner advance to third base in the game. The Rebels at the plate connected on 9 hits in the game but they took advantage of 14 walks or hit batters to score 17 runs. Thea Schneider and Morgan Winter each had two hits with Winter hitting a double and a triple and drove in three runs while Schneider had a single and a double and one RBI. The Rebels were able to get all healthy players into the game and get an at-bat. The Rebels would sweep the doubleheader with a 17-0 win.
The Rebels are now 7-3 on the season with a 5-2 record inside the Red Rock Conference. With a 2-1 record in the non-conference schedule. MCC will be very busy this next week with games on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and a tournament in Jackson on Saturday. With the playoffs in just over two weeks, every win will help the Rebels build their case for a higher seed in the upcoming section playoffs.
