REBEL GIRLS START NEW YEAR WITH LOSS

The MCC Rebels played their first game since December 17th on Monday night. The Rebels played a makeup game with Windom Area a game that was scheduled for Friday, December 10th but was postponed because of snow. The Rebels played without their top scorer on the season Emily Rohrer and the lack of punch on the low post hurt the Rebels but turnovers would cost the Rebels another game.

The Eagles are four and six on the season and they have dominated teams in the Red Rock Conference with wins over HBC and HLOF. The Eagles are a team that likes the three-point line and they were more than willing to put up the shots from deep on Monday. The Rebels may have shown some rust early in the game as MCC turned the ball over six times before taking a shot. Even with the slow start by the Rebels the Eagles didn’t storm out of the gates quickly as MCC did a good job of rebounding. The lack of offense would catch up to MCC as Windom began to make shots from the three-point line. KJ Huska and Kendyl Sammons hit three three-pointers each. That totaled 18 first-half points, nine for each player and MCC only scored 15. The Rebels offense did come around when Mary Lou McNab led the Rebels with seven points in the first half but no one else had more than Thea Schneiders 3 points. Windom Area began to spread the floor with the three-point shots made and that opened up shots around the basket. Hadley Sammons scored 8 points making four free throws and two nice drives to the basket. MCC turned the ball over 20 times in the first half while Windom only turned it over 4 times. Windom led at the break 37-15.

The second half wasn’t any easier for the Rebels who saw the deficit grow. The final nine minutes of the game were played with a running clock as MCC trailed by 35 points. Jayda Hellewell led the Rebels with four second-half points. Though the game wasn’t close the Rebels got three-point baskets from Kelli Miller and Taylor Larson as the MCC ninth graders combined for a third of the teams’ points. Windom dominated the second half led by Tristyn Maras who scored 11 second-half points on the low post. Hadley Sammons, a Freshman guard, matched her eight-point first half with eight more in the second as the Eagles would get the 71 to 29 win.

The Rebels turned the ball over 25 times compared to Windom’s 9. The Eagles made 53% of their shots compared to the Rebels 22%. The Rebels made 6 of 13 free throws in the game but WIndom was 10 of 11. MCC was dominated in every way in this game and it showed on the scoreboard. Mary Lou McNab led the Rebels with 7 points while Jayda Hellewell added 6.
