The MCC Rebels hosted the RTR Knights this past Friday night. The Rebels were facing one of the most exciting young teams in the area. RTR has just one senior on their roster and they play a fast-paced exciting style including full-court pressure all game long. The Knights never slow down on defense and they work to get east shots on offense. This is a team that is perfectly suited to beat up on the Rebels and though they did beat the Rebels MCC would have some positives.
The Rebels came out strong getting the ball inside and at times scoring against the press enough to hold the lead. MCC in fact would lead this game until the five minutes mark of the first half. The Rebel turnovers would prove to be too much in terms of holding the lead. The Knights would force the Rebels into 20 first-half turnovers but the Rebels would force ten out of the Knights. Emily Rohrer and Abby Overman each scored 6 for the Rebels in the opening half and Seanna Swenson added 4. The Knights on the other hand were led by Allyson Nelson who seemed to score every time she touched the ball she made all 4 of her shots on her way to an 8 points night. Alexis Schruers added 7. The Knights would pull away the final 5 minutes of the half to lead 32 to 22.
The second half was more one-sided in terms of scoring but the Rebels never trailed by 35 points. The Rebels Mary Lou McNab scored 8 second-half points becoming just the third Rebel this season to record a double-digit scoring game. The Rebels bench would get hot at the end of the game combining to make 4 three-point shots in the final three minutes. Kelli Miller made 3 and Karissa Hurd made 1. The Rebels would lose 80 to 55 but it was the Rebels highest-scoring game of the season.
In a season where very little is going right, you have to find positives. The Rebels found some positives on Friday even though they lost by 25 points. Emily Rohrer scored 12 and McNab added 10. Kelli Miller scored 9 off the bench for the Rebels and Abby Overman added 6. The Rebels were forced into 26 turnovers but they forced 23. The Knights picked up their 13th win of the season but watching them play one of the highest compliments you can pay a team is saying that it is hard to tell who the best player is. The Knights are deep and they are balanced and everyone who plays fits in with the other players on the court. Allyson Nelson and Faith Thomson each scored 16 to lead the Knights to the win.
