SLAYTON – Hooray! The monthly household budget stayed on track. OH! A tire went flat and popped the budget! Welcome to Reality Check.
Volunteers and donations are still needed for Reality Check, a program that teaches students about living on a budget while dealing with the realities of life.
High school seniors from MCC and Fulda high schools will attend an interactive program on May 4 that assigns them an income, then sends them out to choose insurance, transportation, medical, finance options and more. It’s the live-action version of the game of Life!
Booths at the Reality Check event include statistics such as marital status, number of children and salary. There will be a booth for banking, housing, transportation, groceries, insurance, childcare and more. Cards with a few of life’s unexpected surprises will be chosen as the students work their way through a monthly budget.
This program – a first time event in the area – is being organized by various local businesses and entities, including Minnwest Bank, Murray County 4-H, Murray County EDA, the Slayton Public Library, and the MCC and Fulda school districts. Volunteers will need to be available from 8 a.m. to noon on May 4. The students will go through the program in two 1 ½ hour sessions. Donations such as gift cards are being sought as prizes for the students who make it through the month with a positive balance!
A final organizational meeting will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 26 at the meeting room in the Murray County Courts building. Anyone interested is encouraged to attend. There will be a half-hour volunteer instruction period on the morning of the event before students arrive.
Volunteers or donors are asked to contact Reality Check Committee members Kim Hause at 507-836-1144 or hausek@umn.edu, Justine Wettschreck at 507-836-6023 or jwettschreck@co.murray.mn.us or Kim DeLong at kim_delong@mcc.mntm.org.
