And They Walked Away Just like that, they walked away. Say it isn’t so. Tell me it isn’t true! How could they?
First of all, I suppose we want to know what it was they walked away from. Secondly, why would they? And last but not least, who are “they”?
It all began a while ago and truth is, marching orders were not given. Nope. No one told them to go. At least not in that sense of the word. The ones who walked away did so on their own. It all was just, too, much.
Rather than believe, they went on down the road where the familiar was more palatable. Others were whispering rumors of crazy and this time, what was spoken appeared to make no sense. Unbelievable it was, and so, away they scampered back to who knows where and to who knows what.
“Oh, Master, may I not so much seek to be understood as to understand,” was a prayer written long ago.
Understanding the mystery of faith is one thing, believing what was spoken on that day and every day after is what He offers. What is that? Read on.
First off, let’s address the final question above. Who is the “they”? The “they” has now turned into we—as in—many of us.
Secondly, Why would “they” walk away? Within the mix of the throngs, what was spoken appeared, at first, too good to be true. With this new teaching, trying to make sense of something which made no sense to “them”—well, let’s just say that it seemed like a good time to exit stage left, if you will. And to this day, people are still walking away.
Why? Because they may not believe that which was taught— just like “they” did not believe years ago. Are you following? Hang in there. Not having knowledge is one thing, not believing it is altogether something else.
Let’s now address the what. What is it “they” walked away from? And I quote. I do not quote interpretations of. I do not quote what I think. I quote what was spoken. I quote what the Leader of the pack said. I quote what was walked away from and spoken against.
John 6:51-58 states: “I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever and the bread which I give for the life of the world is my flesh. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him up on the last day.
For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me and I in Him. As the living Father sent me, so he who eats me will live because of me. He who eats this bread will live forever.”
“After this, many of his disciples drew back and no longer walked with him” (John 6:66). John 6:67 asks, “Will you also go away?” John 6:68 continues. “Simon Peter answered him, ‘To Whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life…’” And all this is food for thought. Amen.
