In late 2021, the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) voted to mandate 35-second shot clocks for all high school basketball games starting in the 2023-2024 season. The shot clock debate has long existed in high school hoops across the nation and now Minnesota joins California, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin as states that include shot clocks in varsity games.

With the mandate, schools are responsible to pay for their own shot clocks. The cost of a set ready for installation that was finalized through Daktronics in the spring of 2022 to MCC was $6,970.00.

Former teacher and coach Roger Huyink had heard about the additional cost that would be incurred to the school and wanted to generously donate the total amount of funds needed to purchase and install the shot clocks for MCC. The new shot clocks will be installed in the gymnasiums when they arrive in November of this year and will be ready for use for the 2023-24 season.

Roger, who currently lives in Sauk Rapids, recently returned to Slayton, along with his family, to celebrate the Murray County Fair and join in class reunion festivities. Roger was inducted into the Murray County Central Wall of Fame in 2019. Roger taught at Slayton High School for 39 years (1953-1992). Murray County Central Schools appreciates the generous donation from Roger and his family! Superintendent Joe Meyer stated “Roger has been a great supporter of our school over the past several years. His generous donations have allowed for the purchase of new square backboards in the gym along with the new shot clocks. Even after being gone from our area for 30 years, he continues to give back to the place he called home for so long.”
