The MCC School Board met on Monday, June 13th. The minutes from the May 9th meeting and claims were reviewed and approved. Financials were reviewed and the preliminary budget for FY23 was presented to the Board.
The personnel items include a long-term sub position for the speech language pathologist (Liesa Isder) Harriet Braun, New Hires of Mackenzie De-Long and Grant Harms for elementary and Jason Wischnak Secondary Teacher positions. Secondary Guidance position for Melissa Sheppart, Janese Siedschlag Color Guard Director, Katie Gillette Color Guard Director. Resignations from Ashley Haken – HS Special Ed Teacher and Advisor Position, Resignation for Christie Gergen – Assistant Musical Director position, and Tammi Paulzine – Math Masters Coordinator position.
The employee wages for 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 were presented to the Board now that contracts have been approved. The Master Agreement for the Cooks & Custodians was also approved. MOU’s for Food Service Personal Day. COVID Retention Supplement and Veba were all approved. The Board approved the memberships to the MREA and MSBA groups for the next school year.
Todd Burlingame gave the elementary school update. Enrichment programs are in full swing (there are COVID dollars that are helping to cover these costs). Reading & Math Corp update: there are many returning and only one open position currently. Teaching assignments are all full as of Monday, June 20th. Burlingame also thanked the staff, students and community for their support and kindness while they were here these last 10 years. ECFE update was given and over 220 kids and 70 parents participated at some point this past year.
Jacob Scandrett gave the secondary update. The year ended well on May 27th. Senior Awards Day had over $50,000 being given out to our students in scholarships. Senior transition report shows – 4year schools 54%, 2year 36 %, working after 10% and military 2%. There are 6 students taking advantage of the summer recovery program and 25 taking the summer adventures course. The CEO program has started. High School positions have been shifted to fill positions from within the district. Coaching and Advising positions are still open and now a HS Special Ed Teacher position is open. The Board also needs to address the requirements for graduation for the Personal Fitness portion. With the reduction in a physical education teacher position there isn’t enough staff to cover the needs of the district for the current graduation requirements. This will be on an upcoming agenda.
Superintendent Joe Meyer gave his update. Frustration by many as the legislative session did nothing. The Governor and Lawmakers committed to a 1 Billion dollar framework but nothing was passed by lawmakers before the session was closed. The funds sit unspent and every school district including MCC needs the assistance these funds will provide. Meyer stated he is concerned about the teaching shortage and is working with other area superintendents to try and come up with solutions. The gym roof replacement has been started. Smartboards are being replaced throughout the school. Frontline Worker Pay info has been sent out to all employees.
Second reading of Policy #614 School District Testing Plan and Procedure and #761 Meal Charge Policy. The final reading will happen at the next school board meeting. The free lunch program that includes all students that started with COVID will end before the beginning of the next school year. Students still in need will qualify for the “free and reduced” lunch information and it is important for everyone fills out the form each year for the school to get funding.
Moving on to new business, Sharon Johnson gave the annual update and review for the Q Comp budget and services. The main focus this year was on curriculum mapping. All teachers met their Q comp goals so everyone will all receive their additional $1,200 in June. This is a great tool for our teachers to be able to observe each other and see how they can implement techniques into their own classrooms. The Murray County Editorial Group was designated as the legal paper for the MCC School District. The School Board approved renewing the property insurance for $72,209 for this coming year’s amount which went up over $15,000 dollars from last year. This is mostly due to the increase in replacement materials cost. The 8” Rocker Delta Jointer was declared surplus. This isn’t used much in the shop and can be dangerous to use. It is a working piece of equipment, so the district does plan to sell it. The Board approved the extended trip to Wisconsin Dells to team camp for the Girls Basketball Team. They next approved the annual resolution for a line of credit at the bank. They also approved the resolution for filing for school board. This was set for the 2nd to the 16th of August. Prior to 5pm on the 16th. Cost is $2. There will be three positions open this year.
