The MCC Rebel Girl’s basketball team opened their season Tuesday night when they played host to the Jackson County Central Huskies. The Rebels won just three games last season and have a very young roster with Emily Rohrer the player with the most varsity experience. JCC on the other hand is young with two freshmen in the starting lineup but they also return 2 twenty point per game scorers from a year ago. Though the Rebels had a size advantage the young Rebels would have to beat a very aggressive full court press by the Huskies and for game one of the season that wasn’t going to happen.

The first half was a struggle for the Rebels in fact, of their first ten possessions the Rebels turned the ball over 6 times and missed 3 shots. The good news was they made two shots and had a lead 5-4. That was the last lead the Rebels would have in the game as MCC quickly found themselves behind 12-5. Sadie Voss had a great first half scoring 22 points, seven more than the Rebels scored as a team. Emily Rohrer would finish the half with 9 points while Jayda Hellewell added 3. MCC turned the ball over 28 times in the first half while getting 15 back from the Huskies. The Rebels would trail at the half 57-15.

The Rebels would be allowed to slow the game down some in the second half as the game went to a running clock early on. The Huskies would score just 20 second half points and the Rebels would match them. Casey Miller got off to a nice start in the second half scoring 6 straight points but she would be the only Rebel to score more than 3 points in the half. Sadie Voss would add another nine points to her total and Kylee Wenzel would add six for JCC. Thea Schneider and Kelli Miller would score their first varsity points with a three pointer each. MCC would lose game one of the season 77 to 35.

The Rebels didn’t shoot well but the 28 turnovers was a bigger issue in this game and though the Rebels forced 21 turnovers the Huskies because of their uptempo style are going to turn it over more than most teams. Emily Rohrer led the Rebels with 11 points. Casey Miller and Jayda Hellewell each added 6. The Rebels will play Lakeview on Thursday in Slayton in their second non conference game of the year.
