The Worthington Deanery Roundtable, a group formed to study, read, discuss and learn more about the Catholic Church’s social justice teachings, is hosting with help from the Faith Formation directors, a high school retreat for Catholic youth in grades nine through 12. This retreat will be held on Sunday, February 27 starting at 1 p.m with registration at St. Adrian.
The theme for the roundtable group is “Learn to do good; make justice your aim; redress the wronged, hear the orphan’s plea, defend the widow,” take from Isaiah 1:17. This is also the theme for the youth retreat.
There is a small fee with registration, five dollars, which covers the cost of the food; youth are also asked to bring a nonperishable food item and the items will be divided between Worthington and Luverne food shelves.
The roster of who will be a part of the retreat team include Dana Petricka, Diocese of Winona Director of Youth Ministry and Faith Formation, Sarah Laville, who worked for NET ministries in the US and Scotland as well as Elie Laville, he currently works for NET USA. Father Tim Biren, pastor of Holy Redeemer, Eyota, St. Aloysius, Elba and St. Charles Borromeo, St. Charles. Dana is the MC with Sarah and Elie adding their musical expertise along with their faith stories.
There will be break-out sessions too, issues on immigration will be led by Angel Lopez Ortiz, a young artist who came to the United States as an unaccompanied 16 year old from Guatemala. Maria Stumpf-Ahmed will explain sextrafficking; she works for the Southwest MN Crisis Center and with victims of trafficking. Megan Robson, a nursing student at Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio, will be talking about her mission work that will take place in a hospital in Iraq this summer. There will also be young people from the deanery who have participated in service opportunities who will share their experiences.
After registration it will be a full afternoon of music, stories of faith, Eucharistic Adoration, Reconciliation, the celebration of the Sunday Mass, food of course, and a wrap up talk to send the youth back to their parishes to put into action, in small ways and large, what they have learned.
