Fall is progressing with the days shortening. The weather is cooler, but not freezing - yet. Our garden and yard workings reducing it to mostly weekends now with the sun going down about supper time. As for work getting done, we still have some outside work to be done along with inside the house.
We’ve mentioned in past columns about clearing a space inside to store the garden produce for use during the winter.
In years past we canned usually fruits (peaches, pears, etc) for use during the winter too. Mother used to tell about this time of year, their family had little winter income so about now they would get out the Sears catalogue which had food items then and place an order for what was needed to last the winter.
This would include a case or two of vegetables, and other food to last the winter. Then when winter set in, about all they had money for was an occasional quart of milk. That, along with what they had preserved had to last the winter.
Some things have changed since then. This writer does remember when the local grocery stores had a sale on some canned goods. Mother would ask if they would order a case of whatever was on sale. Then we could use it whenever we needed something we already had.
