GREEN THUMB

We hope your garden, yard, and house are progressing nicely. And the first of the garden produce (radishes, probably) will be big enough to eat shortly.

This is the week of Memorial day, also known as Decoration Day. In past columns we have talked about the history of Memorial day. Back then it was to honor the dead of the Civil War.

Then to honor the dead of all wars. And now to honor all the dead.

In past years we’ve decorated the graves of our family plus some good friends.

Recently, as reported in the local news, the last local Civil War veteran was honored in the Slayton cemetery. It was PFC wheeler, who served in a Wisconsin unit.

He died in 1940 some 75 years after the end of the Civil War.

It happens that PFC Wheeler was a distant relative of this writer. He died before my parents were married and also before I was born, Wish I could have been there for the ceremony - also as the last local relative of the deceased.

We hope you partake of some local Memorial Day services again this year.

in the meantime be sure to care for your house plants too - at least water.

Sometimes we’ve put out some outside for the summer.
